A book in which those who live thus are written is the knowledge of God, who knows those who are his, from which it follows that those are blotted out who do not fall under being remembered by God. 722a Ps 68,30-33a Though I was rich and without wounds I became poor, so that the poor might become rich by my poverty, and I suffered, being wounded on behalf of the wounded who were struck by the fiery darts of the evil one. And even if, while I was so, some of those for whom I became poor and suffered were unfeeling, so as to add pain to my wounds and suppose me to be poor by nature, nevertheless the salvation from the face of God took hold of me. For having risen from the dead and having been taken up, he cast off the wounds and the poverty he had on behalf of men. And when the enemies were destroyed, and especially the devil, it was fitting that a victory ode be struck up by him who conquered in the name about which he said, I have come in my Father's name, and furthermore, transcending him in thought, to magnify the name of him in praise, saying great things in praising and glorifying him, but also contemplating loftily the things concerning him; for it is not possible for God to be magnified otherwise than thus, since all perceptible magnitude is far from him, as he is incorporeal. And since praising God is a sacrifice according to A sacrifice of praise will glorify you, having praised the name of God with an ode and having magnified him in praise, he is confident that it will Please God more than a young bull putting forth horns and hoofs, being offered for sacrifice. Therefore, being pleased with those who sacrifice thus, he says, I desire mercy and not sacrifice, the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings. 725 Ps 69 arg Fittingly the psalm is sung for a remembrance concerning salvation,
all those who repent remembering and recognizing the good and the truth and coming to them; for it says, All the ends of the earth shall remember and turn to the Lord. And since the end of remembrance is to recall those things that were previously forgotten so as to have precise and perfect knowledge, accordingly he said, To the end, for a remembrance, for the Lord to save me, since everyone is saved who casts off the forgetting of good things so as to have use and knowledge of them. For all who have been made in the image and likeness of God and upright have sown within them the concepts concerning God. If at any time, then, sin finds entry through carelessness, if it happens that after its commission one repents, he remembers the good, the concept of which he had by nature, being rational and made in the image of God. 726 Ps 69,3.4 Since insensibility and ignorance of good things leads sin, so that for this reason one commits them with pleasure and boldness, it has been said, at any rate, concerning some that they have glory in things for which they ought to be ashamed; for of them it says, Their glory is in their shame; to whom also the prophecy says, Be ashamed of your boasting; for it brings blame and destruction. Those who thus run insensibly to evil, if they were to receive a perception and concept of it, would wish to cease from doing it; by which

πάντων τῶν μετανοούντων ἀναμιμνῃσκομένων καὶ ἀναγνωριζόντων τὸ ἀγαθὸν καὶ τὴν ἀλήθειαν καὶ ἐρχομένων ἐπ' αὐτά· Μνησθήσονται γάρ φησιν καὶ ἐπιστραφήσονται πρὸς κύριον πάντα τὰ πέρατα τῆς γῆς. καὶ ἐπεὶ τέλος τῆς ἀναμνήσεως ἀναπολῆσαί ἐστιν ἐκεῖνα α πρότερον ἐπιλέλῃστο ὡς ἀκριβῆ καὶ τελείαν γνῶσιν εχειν, ἀκολούθως Εἰς τὸ τέλος εἰς ἀνάμνησιν εἰς τὸ σῶσαί με κύριον ειπεν, σῳζομένου παντὸς τοῦ τὴν λήθην τῶν καλῶν ἀποβαλόντος ὡς χρῆσιν καὶ γνῶσιν αὐτῶν εχειν. πάντες γὰρ κατ' εἰκόνα καὶ ὁμοίωσιν θεοῦ καὶ εὐθεῖς γεγενημένοι ἐσπαρμένας εχουσι τὰς περὶ θεοῦ ἐννοίας. καν ποτε γοῦν ἐξ ἀμελείας ἡ ἁμαρτία παρείσδυσιν λάβῃ, εἰ συμβαίνει μετὰ τὴν πρᾶξιν αὐτῆς μετανοῆσαι, ἀναμιμνῄσκεται τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ ου κατὰ φύσιν τὴν εννοιαν ειχε λογικὸς καὶ κατ' εἰκόνα θεοῦ γεγονώς. 726 Ps 69,3.4 ̓Επεὶ ἡγεῖται τῆς ἁμαρτίας ἀναισθησίᾳ καὶ ἀγνοίᾳ τῶν καλῶν ὡς διὰ τοῦτο σὺν ἡδονῇ καὶ παρρησίᾳ πράττειν αὐτά, ειρηται γοῦν περί τινων ὡς δόξαν εχουσιν ἐφ' οις αἰσχύνεσθαι εδει· ων γάρ φησιν ̔Η δόξα ἐν τῇ αἰσχύνῃ αὐτῶν· πρὸς ους καὶ ἡ προφητεία φησὶν Αἰσχύνθητε ἀπὸ καυχήσεως ὑμῶν· ψόγον γὰρ καὶ ἀπώλειαν φέρει. οἱ ουτως ἀναισθήτως ἐπὶ τὸ κακὸν τρέχοντες, εἰ αισθησιν καὶ εννοιαν αὐτοῦ λάβοιεν, πεπαύσεσθαι τοῦ ποιεῖν αὐτὸ θελήσαιεν· ῳ
