the Man, both the Word himself and the Father and the Unspeakable and Silence and Truth and Church and Life. 11. These things are now beyond ‘alas, alas’ and ‘woe,’ and beyond every tragic exclamation and indignation. For who would not hate the † ill-composing maker of such great falsehoods, seeing Truth become an idol at the hands of Marcus, and this one tattooed with the letters of the alphabet. Recently, compared to the beginning—that which is called yesterday and the day before—the Greeks confess to have received2.22 first sixteen, then later, as time went on, they themselves invented sometimes the aspirates, sometimes the double letters, and last of all they say Palamedes added the long vowels to these. Therefore, before these things came to be among the Greeks, Truth did not exist; for her body, according to you, Marcus, is later than Cadmus and those before him, later than those who added the remaining elements, and later than yourself. For you alone, as an idol, brought down the so-called Truth of yours. But who will endure your Silence that babbles so much, which names the unnameable and explains the unspeakable and relates the unsearchable, and says that he, whom you call bodiless and formless, opened his mouth and brought forth the Word, as one of the composite living creatures; and that his Word, being similar to the one who projected him and having become the form of the invisible, consists of thirty elements and four syllables; therefore, according to the likeness of the Word, the Father of all, as you say, will consist of thirty elements and four syllables. Or again, who will endure you, confining the Word of God, the founder and demiurge and maker of all things, into shapes and numbers—sometimes thirty, sometimes twenty-four, sometimes only six—and cutting him up into four syllables and thirty elements, and reducing the Lord of all, the one who established the heavens, to the number ˉωˉ ˉπˉ ˉη, similarly to the alphabet, and subdividing the Father himself, who contains all things yet is uncontainable, into a Tetrad and an Ogdoad and a Decad and a Dodecad, and through such multiplications explaining the unspeakable and inconceivable nature of the Father, as you say? And you construct the essence and the substance of him whom you call bodiless and without substance out of many letters, with some being born from others, yourself becoming a false Daedalus and an evil craftsman of the 2.23 all-surpassing power; and subdividing the essence which you say is indivisible into mute and vowel and semi-vowel sounds, falsely attributing their muteness to the Father of all and to his Thought, you have cast all those who are persuaded by you into the highest blasphemy and greatest impiety. Wherefore, both justly and fittingly to such audacity of yours, the divine elder and herald of the truth has cried out against you in verse, saying thus: O Marcus, maker of idols and observer of portents, skilled in the astrological and magical art, by which you strengthen the teachings of error, showing signs to those led astray by you, undertakings of an apostate power, which your father Satan always supplies for you to do through the angelic power of Azazel, having you as a forerunner of anti-godly villainy. And these things, then, the God-loving elder said; but we shall try to briefly go through the rest of their initiation, though it is lengthy, and to bring into the light the things that have been hidden for a long time. For in this way they would become easily refuted by all. 12. Therefore, these men who reduce all things to numbers, having united the generation of their Aeons and the wandering and recovery of the sheep into the same thing, attempt to declare it more mystically, asserting that the wholes consist of a Monad and a Dyad; and counting from the monad up to the four, they thus generate the Decad.
