When what had happened was thus reported to the emperor, the death of Cazan became known to his ambassadors throughout the 460 cities, and their mourning became great. Nevertheless, they were also consoled when the emperor sent word. But still Amourios was thus subdued, I know not whether because, as was likely, he was still suspicious of the fear from Charbandas (for he wished to keep his brother's agreements), or whether feigning goodwill from the emperor, and having sent a message he asked the emperor for the midland region of the rivers along the Sangarius, truly named Mesonesion, on the condition that it, being inhabited by his own people, would serve as a guard for those dwelling within. But while such matters were for the time being in suspense, some of his men, running about in squadrons, became an evil encounter for the Romans going out to harvest their neglected properties. For from this, the fines for the captured thieves were outright fines, if they were to tread on land which those men had acquired by the sword and were to enjoy the fruits that had accrued to them from war. For these reasons, men who hired fighters and dared to attempt to reap the lands near the sea, where they were successful they also profited, but for the most part they failed and were slaughtered. And these things were done outside of the city of Constantine, but within, 461 there was on the one hand the suspicion of the many toward the patriarch, and on the other hand the greed of the powerful, who were profiteering in both grain and goods; for they were mostly degraded, being overcome by sordid gain, and betraying everything for money they arranged all things feebly, and the affairs of the state were terribly turbulent. But the profiteering greatly distressed, so it seemed, the patriarch, who for the most part pleased the people and, as it seemed, stood up for them against the powerful, so that he spoke freely in letters to the ruler, and insisted with oaths that if the profiteering in grain were not stopped, he would cast curses from a general synod on the profiteers, and that this should henceforth cease. And he swore these things, and nothing at all was accomplished, so that these things too became part of the case against him, that in vain he swore by him who came down from heaven that he wished to do this and that, if these things did not come to pass.

(2) But the ruler brought the schismatics together on the twenty-ninth 462 of Gamelion. And he also brought out of prison John Tarchaneiotes, whom he had previously held in loose custody, but since he too clashed with the patriarch, he was confined with them. Then, having dismissed part of the assembly, he had him there as well. And having taken his seat before all, he delivered a speech, with the blind monks also seated, to whom he spoke even more, as they seemed more worthy than the others, having the patriarch on one side and on both sides high priests and clerics, with the entire senate and monks also present, delivering a very noble and thoughtful oration. "I reckon that you know, and all men know, that nothing is more pleasant to me than for the church of God, with every pretext for scandal removed, to be at peace, for which purpose all my zeal has been present since I became emperor, superior to every other occupation, despising both imperial luxury and the laws of nature, so that your coming together as one and your concord might be preferred even to my dearest ones. And as much as was likely, it seems, has been accomplished, and nothing, I think, remains that is reasonably sufficient for scandal. But as for you, it has often occurred to me to wonder by what reasonings you fortify yourselves to stand apart from the church and choose to blink, as it were, at the true 463 light. If, then, it is time to utter the words of the divine David, entreating God, "3O Lord, bow thy heavens, and come down: touch the mountains, and they shall smoke. Cast forth lightning, and thou shalt enlighten them,"3 so that I might slightly alter the psalmody. For it is God's alone to enlighten your consciences, you who have chosen to live for God, but who are in danger of being far from God, for no other reason than that of the orthodox and well-ordered church
