becoming angry, or swearing, or lying, or having spoken an idle or bold 6.28.4 or careless word. Around this time lived Copres and Helles and Elias. They say that Copres was granted by God the gift of healing 6.28.5 various passions and diseases, and power over demons; and that Helles, having been trained from his youth in the monastic discipline, performed many miracles, such as carrying fire in his bosom without burning his garment; and by this he encouraged his fellow monks, as the display of miracles 6.28.6 followed a good life. Elias at that time was practicing philosophy in the desert not far from the city of Antinoöpolis, being about one hundred and ten years of age; before this he was said to have dwelt alone in the desert for seventy years; and having become so aged, he continued fasting and living courageously. 6.28.7 In addition to these, Apelles also flourished at that time near Achoris, performing very many miracles in the monasteries throughout Egypt. Once when he was working as a smith (for this was his trade), a phantom of a demon in the form of a beautiful woman tempted him to incontinence; but he drew the iron which he was working from the fire, and burned the face of the demon; and it fled, shrieking and wailing. 6.28.8 The most famous fathers of monks at that time were Isidore and Serapion and Dioscorus. But Isidore, having enclosed the monastery on all sides, took care that none of those within should go out and that they should have all necessities; 6.28. Serapion lived in the Arsinoite nome, having about ten thousand under his care; he led them all to provide for their necessities by their own labors and to supply others in need; in the summer season, reaping for hire, they laid aside enough 6.28.10 grain for themselves and also shared with other monks. Not more than one hundred monks resorted to Dioscorus. Being a presbyter, in celebrating the sacred rites he proceeded with all exactness, testing and carefully questioning those who approached the mysteries, so that their minds would be purified beforehand and they would not be conscious of having done anything 6.28.11 dreadful. Also at that time, the presbyter Eulogius was most scrupulous about the administration of the divine mysteries; they say that when he was officiating he had such foresight of the mind of those who approached, that he clearly convicted them of their sins and detected the secrets hidden in each one's mind; therefore, he would for a time exclude from the altar those who had done evil or had contemplated something wicked, making their sin manifest; and when they were cleansed by repentance, he received them again. 6.2.1 Around this time Apollos also lived in the Thebaid; he began to practice philosophy at the beginning of his manhood; and after dwelling in the desert for forty years, he occupied a cave under the mountain near the inhabited region, at God's command. On account of the multitude of his miracles, he became famous in a short time and the leader of many monks; for his teachings were also persuasive for their benefit. 6.2.2 But what kind of discipline he practiced and what great divine and wonderful things he did is recorded by Timothy, who was in charge of the church of Alexandria, having very well narrated his life and the lives of many of whom I have made mention and of other renowned monks. 6.2.3 At that time many excellent and good men were diligently practicing philosophy throughout Alexandria, being about two thousand in number; of whom some dwelt in the so-called desert places, and others around Mareotis and the neighboring parts of Libya. 6.2.4 Among these, Dorotheus, a Theban by birth, was exceptionally distinguished; whose life was, by day, to collect stones from the nearby sea and each year to build a small dwelling and give it to those unable to build for themselves, and by night, for his own sustenance, he would weave cords from palm leaves and make baskets. 6.2.5 His food was six ounces of bread and a bunch of small herbs, and his drink was water. Having practiced this discipline from his youth, he did not cease even when he was old; and he was never seen sleeping on a mat or a bed, or stretching out his feet for rest, or willingly giving himself up to sleep, except while working or eating,
