He that does wrong shall receive for the wrong which he has done. And there is no respect of persons with God. That no man go beyond and defraud his brother in any matter: because God is the avenger of all such things. Let every one that names the name of God depart from iniquity. They that will be rich, fall into temptation, and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is the root of all evil, which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. You rich men, weep and howl for your miseries that shall come upon you. Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are motheaten. Your gold and silver is cankered; and the rust of them shall be a witness against you, and the rust will eat your flesh. As fire you have stored up treasure in the last day. Judgment is without mercy to the one who has shown no mercy. If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, And one of you say to them, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; but you give them not those things which are needful to the body, what does it profit? The Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment. Whoever has this world's goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his bowels of compassion, how does the love of God abide in him? Hear, O man, Solomon: Do not say, "Go and come again, and tomorrow I will give." For you do not know 95.1484 what the next day will bring forth. What commands you disregard! And you are downcast, and hard to approach, avoiding encounters, lest you should be forced to cast even a small thing from your hands. You know one phrase: I do not have, nor will I give; for I am poor. You are poor indeed, and in want of every good thing; poor in love, poor in charity, poor in faith in God, poor in eternal hope. Make your brothers sharers with the moths. What tomorrow will rot, give today to those in need. The harshest form of greed is to share none of the perishable things with the needy. "Whom," he says, "do I wrong, by holding on to my own things?" What things, tell me, are your own? Did you not come forth naked from the womb? Do you not return again naked to the earth? Whence then are the things you have now? If you say they are from chance, you are an atheist, not acknowledging the Creator, nor being grateful to the Giver. But if you confess they are from God, tell me the reason why you received them. Is God unjust, who distributes the things of life to us unequally? Why are you rich, while that man is poor, but that you might receive the reward of goodness and faithful stewardship, and he be honored with the great prizes of patience? But you, embracing all things in the insatiable bosom of greed, do you think you wrong no one, by depriving so many? Who is the greedy man? He who does not abide in self-sufficiency. And who is the defrauder? He who takes away what belongs to each person. But you are the greedy man, you are the defrauder, by taking what you received for stewardship, and making it your own private property. If he who strips a clothed man will be called a clothes-stealer, is he who does not clothe the naked, when he is able to do so, worthy of another name? The bread which you hold back belongs to the hungry; the cloak, which you guard in storerooms, belongs to the naked; the shoe, which rots beside you, belongs to the barefoot. Μὴ ὑπερβαίνειν καὶ πλεονεκτεῖν ἐν πράγματι τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ· διότι ἔκδικος ὁ Θεὸς περὶ πάντων τούτων. Ἀποστήτω ἀπὸ ἀδικίας πᾶς ὁ ὀνομάζων τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Θεοῦ. Οἱ βουλόμενοι πλουτεῖν, ἐμπίπτουσιν εἰς πειρασμὸν, καὶ εἰς παγίδα, καὶ εἰς ἐπιθυμίας πολλὰς ἀνοήτους καὶ βλαβερὰς, αἵτινες βυθίζουσι τοὺς ἀνθρώπους εἰς ὄλεθρον καὶ ἀπώλειαν. Ῥίζα γὰρ πάντων τῶν κακῶν ἐστιν ἡ φιλαργυρία, ἧς τινες ὀρεγόμενοι ἀπεπλανήθησαν ἀπὸ τῆς πίστεως, καὶ ἑαυτοὺς περιέπειραν ὀδύναις πολλαῖς. Οἱ πλούσιοι, κλαύσατε ὀλολύζοντες ἐπὶ ταῖς ταλαιπωρίαις ὑμῶν ταῖς ἐπερχομέναις. Ὁ πλοῦτος ὑμῶν σέσηπε, καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια ὑμῶν σητόβρωτα ἐγένετο. Ὁ χρυσὸς ὑμῶν, καὶ ὁ ἄργυρος κατίωται, καὶ ὁ ἰὸς αὐτῶν εἰς μαρτύριον ὑμῖν ἔσται, καὶ φάγεται τὰς σάρκας ὑμῶν ὁ ἰός. Ὡς πῦρ ἐθησαυρίσατε ἐν ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ. Ἡ κρίσις ἀνέλεος τῷ μὴ ποιήσαντι ἔλεος. Ἐὰν ὁ ἀδελφὸς, ἢ ἀδελφὴ γυμνοὶ ὑπάρχουσι, καὶ λειπόμενοι τῆς ἐφημέρου τροφῆς, εἴπῃ δέ τις ἐξ ὑμῶν, Ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ, θερμαίνεσθε, καὶ χορτάζεσθε· μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος, τί ὄφελος; Οἶδε Κύριος εὐσεβεῖς ἐκ τῶν πειρασμῶν ῥύεσθαι, ἀδίκους δὲ εἰς ἡμέραν κρίσεως κολαζομένους τηρεῖν. Ὅστις ἔχει τὸν βίον τοῦ κόσμου τούτου, καὶ θεωρεῖ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχοντα, καὶ κλείσει τὰ σπλάγχνα, πῶς ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ Θεοῦ μένει ἐν αὐτῷ; Ἄκουσαι ἄνθρωπε, Σολομῶντος· Μὴ εἴπῃς, Ἐπανελθὼν ἐπάνηκε. καὶ αὔριον δώσω. Μίαν οἶδας φωνήν· Οὐκ ἔχω, οὐδὲ δώσω· πένης γάρ εἰμι. Πένης εἶ τῷ ὄντι, καὶ ἐνδεὴς παντὸς ἀγαθοῦ· πένης ἀγάπης, πένης φιλανθρωπίας, πένης πίστεως εἰς Θεὸν, πένης ἐλπίδος τῆς αἰωνίου. Συμμεριστὰς ποίησον τῶν σητῶν τοὺς ἀδελφούς σου. Τὸ αὔριον σηπόμενον, σήμερον μετάδος τοῖς δεομένοις. Πλεονεξίας εἶδος τὸ χαλεπώτατον, μηδὲν τῶν φθειρομένων τοῖς ἐνδεέσι καταμερίσαι. Τίνα, φησὶν, ἀδικῶ, συνέχων τὰ ἐμαυτοῦ; ποῖα, εἰπέ μοι, σαυτοῦ; Οὐχὶ γυμνὸς ἐξέπεσας τῆς γαστρός; οὐχὶ γυμνὸς πάλιν εἰς τὴν γῆν ἀποστρέφεις; τὰ δὲ παρόντα σοι πόθεν; Εἰ μὲν ἀπὸ ταυτομάτου λέγεις, ἄθεος εἶ, μὴ γνωρίζων τὸν Κτίσαντα, μηδὲ χάριν ἔχων τῷ δεδωκότι. Εἰ δὲ ὁμολογεῖς εἶναι παρὰ Θεοῦ, εἰπὲ τὸν λόγον δι' ὃν ἔλαβες. Μὴ ἄδικος ὁ Θεὸς, ὁ ἀνίσως ἡμῖν διαιρῶν τὰ τοῦ βίου; διὰ τί σὺ μὲν πλουτεῖς, ἐκεῖνος δὲ πένεται, ἢ πάντως ἵνα καὶ σὺ χρηστότητος καὶ πιστῆς οἰκονομίας μισθὸν ὑποδέξῃ, κἀκεῖνος τοῖς μεγάλοις ἄθλοις τῆς ὑπομονῆς τιμηθῇ; Σὺ δὲ πάντα τοῖς ἀπληρώτοις τῆς πλεονεξίας κόλποις περιλαμβάνων, οὐδένα οἴει ἀδικεῖν τοσούτοις ἀποστερῶν; τίς ἐστιν ὁ πλεονέκτης; Ὁ μὴ ἐμμένων τῇ αὐταρκείᾳ. Τίς δὲ ὁ ἀποστερητής; ὁ ἀφαιρούμενος τὰ ἑκάστων. Σὺ δὲ ὁ πλεονέκτης, σὺ δὲ ἀποστερητὴς, ἃ πρὸς οἰκονομίαν ἐδέξω, ταῦτα ἴδια σεαυτοῦ ποιούμενος. Εἰ ὁ μὲν ἐνδεδυμένον ἀπογυμνῶν, λωποδύτης ὁμολογηθήσεται, ὁ δὲ γυμνὸν μὴ ἐνδύων, δυνάμενος τοῦτο ποιεῖν, ἄλλης προσηγορίας ἐστὶ ἄξιος; Τοῦ πεινῶντός ἐστιν ὁ ἄρτος, ὃν σὺ κατέχεις· τοῦ γυμνητεύοντος, τὸ ἱμάτιον, ὃ σὺ φυλάττεις ἐν ἀποθήκαις· τοῦ ἀνυποδήτου, τὸ ὑπόδημα, ὃ παρὰ σοὶ κατασήπεται.
