blows, (351) and endure these things until death and be not ashamed. But if you are ashamed to suffer for My commandments, as I, God, suffered for you, I too will consider it a shame for you to be with Me in My coming with glory and I will say to My angels: "This one in My humiliation was ashamed of Me and did not deign to abandon the glory of the world and become like Me, but now when he himself has been stripped of corruptible glory, and I have been glorified in the immortal glory of My Father, I am ashamed even to look at him! Therefore let him be cast out, let him be taken away as the ungodly, that he may not see the glory of the Lord!". These things, then, will be heard by those who keep all the commandments as they see fit, but because of shame and embarrassment before men do not deign to accept the insults and dishonors or revilings brought upon them, nor endure the blows nor the wounds from them.

Shudder, O men, and tremble, and the insults that God endured for our salvation, you also endure with joy! God is struck by a most vile slave, giving you an example of victory, and you do not deign to suffer this from a man of like passions as yourself? You are ashamed to become an imitator of God, and how will you reign with Him and be glorified with Him in the kingdom of heaven, not having endured Him? For if He, for your part, had been ashamed to become man for you and had left you lying in the fall of transgression (352) until the present, would you not have remained with the unbelievers and the ungodly in the recesses of Hades, O wretched one? Do you believe that Christ is God? "Yes," he says. If then you believe that He is God who made heaven and earth, who without being emptied was emptied from the Father's bosom, who came down to earth from the infinite height of His Godhead and His ineffable glory and became a lowly and poor man for you, you, being clay and ash and dust, do not deign to come down from your supposedly high throne and be humbled before your brother, who stands below in this visible realm, but perhaps surpasses you in virtues? Do you not cast off the garment that seems to be splendid, being put to shame by his hair-shirt and humility? Do you not disregard all things that are truly a plaything and rather a mask of unseemliness and not a glory of splendor? Do you not become like your Creator and God in all things, humbling yourself with your brethren? If, then, you do not endure to be made like Him, you make yourself, unknowingly, greater and more glorious than He, showing yourself to us as another Annas or Caiaphas or Pilate and tyrant, wanting the Creator of all to stand before you not as one seated with you but as one of the condemned.

These things, then, are for the rich and rulers and those who sit above others and raise their eyebrows with a haughty spirit. But what of those who have supposedly left all things and become poor for the sake of the kingdom of heaven? What then shall we say? Behold, you have become poor, brother, and have imitated (353) your Master Christ and God. See, therefore, that this One who is above all the heavens is now with you and walks with you. Behold, you two are journeying together; someone met you on the path of life, gave your Master a blow, and likewise gave you one. The Master does not speak against it, and you resist? Yes, he says, for He said to the one who struck Him: "If I have spoken wrongly, bear witness to the wrong; but if well, why do you strike me?" He did not say this in contradiction, as you have supposed, but because He committed no sin, nor was deceit found in His mouth; and besides, also so that it might not be thought that the one who said to Him, "Is that how you answer the high priest?" struck Him justly as one who had committed a sin, for this reason He uttered this, showing Himself to be blameless. But we are surely not so, we who with many sins
