having escaped wrath, to continue in these works, in which you formerly continued, when you had this life, which we advise you to put away. Having put off the old man with his deeds. In short, he says summarily that a change of the old ways must take place. For he calls the old man the old way, the one that has come upon us from the fall. And having put on the new, which is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of him who created him, where there is neither Greek nor Jew, circumcision nor uncircumcision, barbarian, Scythian, slave, free, but Christ is all, and in all. Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering, forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness. Just as he calls the old man the wickedness that has come upon us from the fall, so he calls the new man the life according to Christ, so that all may be imitators of Christ, inasmuch as also in Jew, and in Greek and Barbarian, and in slave, all of whom he wishes to become likenesses of himself. And let the peace of God rule in your hearts, to which also you were called in one body; and be ye thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him. Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them. Children, obey your parents in all things. For this is well pleasing unto the Lord. Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged. Servants, obey in all things your masters according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as 95.901 menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God. And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

CHAPTER IV. Masters, give unto your servants that which is just and equal; knowing that also

ye have a Master in heaven. Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving; Withal praying also for us, that God would open unto us a door of utterance, to speak the mystery of Christ, for which I am also in bonds: That I may make it manifest, as I ought to speak. And the peaceful, he says, let it be from the heart, and let it prevail from the heart, not appearing to be accomplished by deceits of words. For the unity of the one body demands the union through peace, into which we all have been taken up by power, which is the body of Christ. Walk in wisdom toward them that are without, redeeming the time. Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. All my state shall he declare unto you. He wishes the association with unbelievers to be friendly, up to this common friendship. For as long as we are with such people, we must be together peacefully, since after this there will be the: 'You have made me to dwell alone in hope.' Tychicus, a beloved brother, and a faithful minister and fellowservant in the Lord, whom I have sent unto you for this same purpose, that he might know your estate, and comfort your hearts; With Onesimus, a faithful and beloved brother, who is one of you. Ἄνθρωπον γὰρ λέγει παλαιὸν, τὸν τρόπον τὸν πάλαι, τὸν ἀπὸ τῆς πτώσεως ἐπιγεγενημένον. Καὶ ἐνδυσάμενοι τὸν νέον, τὸν ἀνακαινούμενον εἰς ἐπίγνωσιν, κατ' εἰκόνα τοῦ Κτίσαντος αὐτὸν, ὅπου οὐκ ἔνι Ἕλλην καὶ Ἰουδαῖος, περιτομὴ καὶ ἀκροβυστία, βάρβαρος, Σκύθης, δοῦλος, ἐλεύθερος, ἀλλὰ τὰ πάντα καὶ ἐν πᾶσι Χριστός. Ἐνδύσασθε οὖν ὡς ἐκλεκτοὶ τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἅγιοι καὶ ἠγαπημένοι σπλάγχνα οἰκτιρμοῦ, χρηστότητα, ταπεινοφροσύνην, πραότητα, μακροθυμίαν, ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων, καὶ χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς, ἐάν τις πρός τινα ἔχῃ μομφὴν, καθὼς καὶ ὁ Χριστὸς ἐχαρίσατο ὑμῖν, οὕτω καὶ ὑμεῖς. Καὶ πᾶν ὅ τι ἐὰν ποιῆτε, ἐκ ψυχῆς ἐργάζεσθε, ὡς τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ οὐκ ἀνθρώποις, εἰδότες ὅτι ἀπὸ Κυρίου λήψεσθε τὴν ἀνταπόδοσιν τῆς κληρονομίας· τῷ γὰρ Κυρίῳ Χριστῷ δουλεύετε. Ὁ δὲ ἀδικῶν, κομιεῖται ὃ ἠδίκησε, καὶ οὐκ ἔστι προσωποληψία.

ΚΕΦΑΛ. ∆ʹ. Οἱ κύριοι, τὸ δίκαιον καὶ τὴν ἰσότητα τοῖς δούλοις παρέχεσθε, εἰδότες, ὅτι καὶ

ὑμεῖς ἔχετε Κύριον ἐν οὐρανοῖς. Τῇ προσευχῇ προσκαρτερεῖτε, γρηγοροῦντες ἐν αὐτῇ ἐν εὐχαριστίᾳ, προσευχόμενοι ἅμα καὶ περὶ ἡμῶν, ἵνα ὁ Θεὸς ἀνοίξῃ ἡμῖν θύραν τοῦ λόγου, λαλῆσαι τὸ μυστήριον τοῦ Χριστοῦ, διὸ καὶ δέδεμαι, ἵνα φανερώσω αὐτὸ, ὡς δεῖ με λαλῆσαι. Καὶ τὸ εἰρηναῖον, φησὶν, ἐκ καρδίας ἔστω, καὶ ἐκ καρδίας κρατείτω, μὴ λόγων ἀπάταις δοκούντων ἐπιτελεῖσθαι. Ἀπαιτεῖ γὰρ τὴν διὰ τῆς εἰρήνης ἕνωσιν τοῦ ἑνὸς σώματος ἑνότης, εἰς ὃ πάντες ἀνειλήμμεθα δυνάμει, ὅπερ ἐστὶ σῶμα τοῦ Χριστοῦ. Ἐν σοφίᾳ περιπατεῖτε πρὸς τοὺς ἔξω, τὸν καιρὸν ἐξαγοραζόμενοι. Ὁ λόγος ὑμῶν πάντοτε ἐν χάριτι, ἅλατι ἠρτυμένος, εἰδέναι πῶς δεῖ ὑμᾶς ἑνὶ ἑκάστῳ ἀποκρίνεσθαι. Τὰ κατ' ἐμὲ πάντα γνωρίσει ὑμῖν. Τὴν συνδιατριβὴν τῶν ἀπίστων φιλικὴν εἶναι βούλεται μέχρι τῆς κοινῆς ταύτης φιλίας. Ἕως γὰρ σύνεσμεν τοῖς τοιούτοις, εἰρηνικῶς συνεῖναι δεῖ, ἐπειδὴ μετὰ τοῦτο ἔσται τό· Κατὰ μόνας ἐπ' ἐλπίδι κατῴκησάς με. Τυχικὸς, ὁ ἀγαπητὸς ἀδελφὸς, καὶ πιστὸς διάκονος, καὶ σύνδουλος ἐν Κυρίῳ, ὃν ἔπεμψα πρὸς ὑμᾶς, εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο, ἵνα γνῷ τε τὰ περὶ ὑμῶν, καὶ παρακαλέσῃ τὰς καρδίας ὑμῶν σὺν Ὀνησίμῳ τῷ πιστῷ καὶ ἀγαπητῷ ἀδελφῷ, ὅς ἐστιν ἐξ ὑμῶν. Πάντα ὑμῖν γνωρίσουσι τὰ ὧδε. Ἀσπάζεται ὑμᾶς. Ἀσιανὸς ἀνὴρ ἀπολιπὼν τὴν πατρίδα, καὶ ἀκολουθῶν τῷ Ἀποστόλῳ. ∆ιὸ καὶ ἀγαπητὸν ἀδελφὸν,
