responsible. For indeed, later, having endured much worse than this, He is found to have said nothing at all, but rather is shown even praying for those who crucified Him. He, being mocked, is not indignant, and you are annoyed? He endures spitting and buffetings and scourgings, and you do not deign even to receive a harsh word? He accepts a cross and a dishonorable death and the pains from the nails, and you do not deign to perform the most menial services? And how will you become a partaker of His glory, not deigning [to do so]? Truly in vain you left (354) your wealth, not willing to take up the cross, as He commanded, with the word of truth; "Sell your possessions and give to the poor," Christ commanded the young man and us with him, "and take up your cross and come, follow me! ". But you scattered your wealth, yet not deigning to take up the cross, as has been said, which is to bear zealously the onslaught of all temptations, you have been left behind on the path of life and have been miserably separated from your sweetest Master and God!

But I beseech you, fathers and brothers, let us keep all the commandments of Christ, let us endure the temptations that come upon us until death for the longing of the kingdom of heaven, so that we may become partakers of the glory of Jesus and participants of eternal life and heirs of the enjoyment of the ineffable good things in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be glory for ever. Amen.

Concerning the life-giving mortification that comes from the Spirit to those who struggle, even before death. And that those who in grace have become superior to the law receive consciously within themselves the grace of the divine light; for those who have not already received this light in the present life, nor behold it, are still under the shadow of the law and will be judged by it. And what sort of man the superior and the priest ought to be, who has received from above the authority to bind and to loose. And that to the one who truly performs sacred rites and is illumined by the divine light, all are

manifest, both those who walk in the Spirit of God and those who have not yet put off the man of dust.

Discourse 28. (355) Brothers and fathers, take heed how you hear. For Christ and God says:

"Search the Scriptures." For what reason does He say this? So that, first, we may be taught the way leading to (356) salvation, and then, by walking unswervingly in the practice of the commandments, we may attain to the salvation of our souls. Who then is our salvation? Jesus the Christ, as the angel standing by the shepherds said: "Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people, for unto you is born this day a Savior, who is Christ the Lord in the city of David." Let us therefore hasten, each of us, beloved, let us run vigorously, carrying nothing burdensome or worldly or hard to bear, so that, not being forced to walk more slowly because of this, we may be able to reach and enter the city of David. I beseech you through the grace working in you not to neglect your salvation, but rising as from a sleep of evil opinion and carelessness, let us not stand nor sit down until we are outside the world and have found and seen our Savior and God there,
