it is written, who has already put one away, but has two with him in their prime and fair to look upon, and wherever he goes, he takes them around with him, and this while living in luxury and stuffing himself? 7.30.15 On account of which things all groan and lament among themselves, 7.30.15 but they so feared his tyranny and power that they dare not accuse him. 7.30.16 But these things, as we have said before, one might correct in a man who at least holds the catholic faith and is numbered with us; but for him who has danced away the mystery and made a show of the abominable heresy of Artemas—for why should one not with difficulty declare his father?—we think it unnecessary to demand an account of these things from him.” 7.30.17 Then at the end of the letter they add this: “We were therefore compelled, having excommunicated him who sets himself against God and will not yield, to appoint another bishop in his place for the catholic church, by the providence of God, as we are persuaded, Domnus, the son of the blessed Demetrianus, who before this illustriously presided over the same parish, a man adorned with all the good qualities proper to a bishop. And we have made this known to you, that you may write to him and receive from him the letters of communion; but let him write to Artemas, and let those who think with Artemas have communion with him.” 7.30.18 Paul, then, having fallen from the episcopate along with the orthodoxy of the faith, Domnus, as has been said, succeeded to the ministry of the church at Antioch. 7.30.19 But since Paul was by no means willing to leave the church building, the emperor Aurelian, being appealed to, decided most favorably concerning what should be done, ordering the building to be assigned to those with whom the bishops of the doctrine in Italy and the city of the Romans should communicate in writing. Thus indeed the aforementioned man is driven out of the church with the utmost disgrace by the secular authority. 7.30.20 Such, then, was Aurelian's disposition towards us at that time; but as his reign advanced, he thought differently concerning us, and he was already being moved by certain counsels to raise a persecution against us, and there was much talk of this on all sides. 7.30.21 But as he was about to do this and was, one might almost say, putting his signature to the decrees against us, divine justice overtook him, all but chaining him by the arms to his enterprise, and making it brilliantly clear for all to see that there would never be any freedom for the rulers of this life against the churches of Christ, unless the defending hand, by a divine and heavenly judgment, for the sake of discipline and conversion, should permit this to be done at such times as it might approve. 7.30.22 At any rate, after Aurelian had reigned for six years, he was succeeded by Probus. And after he had held power for about the same number of years, Carus, with his sons Carinus and Numerian, succeeded. And again, when not even three full years had passed for them, the rule passed to Diocletian and those associated with him, in whose time the persecution against us and the contemporary destruction of the churches was accomplished. 7.30.23 But a little before this, Dionysius, the bishop of Rome, after having completed nine years in the ministry, was succeeded by Felix. 7.31.1 At this time also the one who was mad in his mind, and the namesake of the demoniacal heresy, was arming himself with the perversion of his reason, since the demon, that is, Satan who fights against God, had put the man forward for the ruin of many. A barbarian indeed in his life, both in word and deed, and being by nature a certain demonic and mad person, he attempted things consistent with these; he tried to fashion himself into Christ, at one time proclaiming himself to be the Paraclete and the Holy Spirit itself, and being puffed up with his madness, at another, like Christ, choosing twelve disciples as partners of his innovation. 7.31.2 And indeed false and godless doctrines, which he had patched together, collected from countless godless heresies that had long since been extinguished, he vomited forth from Persia upon our inhabited world like some deadly poison, from which indeed the impious name of the Manichaeans among the many even to this day
