For that it is rumored among many that Galen the physician met that Mary Magdalene, and heard from her that Christ healed a man blind from birth, and from this said to her that he knew well the minerals of the earth (for if this were not so, he would not have given sight to that blind man), we too know this, but we have classified such a rumor with the myths. For it is impossible for Galen, having met Mary Magdalene, as they431 say, to have mentioned King Marcus in his writings to Piso, and again Commodus in his first book on ethics; for from our Lord Jesus Christ until the reign of Commodus itself about one hundred and fifty years are found. And so much for these things. But I know, beloved, that you have been perplexed about this among other things, saying "Why, when the disciples and apostles of Christ wrote down the other things, did they remain completely silent about the dormition of the ever-virgin?" And it can be said that the evangelists, in narrating the events of the incarnate economy of our Savior, have come down to his very ascension from the earth. But the all-blameless mother of our Lord Jesus Christ is said to have reached a deep old age, as the most divine Andrew of Crete says. Therefore it was impossible for the dormition of the ever-virgin to be mixed in with the evangelical history, since it happened, as we said, a long time afterwards. And again, the disciples of Christ did not have time to discuss this separately, because being occupied with the word of the economy, and having great concern for how they might make the unbelievers believers and how all might come to the blameless faith in Christ, they overlooked the other things, and especially those things not contri432buting to the divine proclamation. Nevertheless, the events of that divine dormition have not been kept entirely silent; for the God-revealing and great Dionysius is found writing certain wonderful things about it in his letters to Timothy. And pay attention, if you wish, to what is said. For this divine man goes through the following things word for word concerning this: "And so we, as you know, both I myself and many of our holy brothers, came together for the sight of the life-giving and God-receiving body, and James the brother of God was also present, and Peter, the chief summit of the apostles." And to these he also brings forward the one leading that divine hymn, having become divinely inspired, being in ecstasy and as it were departing from himself, being transformed for the hymnody. And what need is there to say much? The divine Dionysius shows through his words that almost the entire company of the apostles and

κυριακοῦ σώματος, εἰ καὶ μανέντες οἱ Ἀπελλιανοὶ ἔλεγον ἐν τῷ τάφῳ διαλυθῆναι τὸ σῶμα τοῦ κυρίου εἰς τὰ τέσσαρα στοιχεῖα ἐξ
ὧν καὶ συνέστηκε. τὰ μέντοι 430 πολλὰ σώματα τῶν κεκοιμημένων ἁγίων ἀνέστησαν ὡς ἐντεῦθεν θεὸν ἀνακηρυχθῆναι τὸν πάσχοντα,

ἀναλήψεως. ἡ δὲ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ πανάμωμος μήτηρ εἰς γῆρας λέγεται ἐφθακέναι βαθύ, καθά φησιν ὁ θειότατος Ἀνδρέας
ὁ Κρήτης. οὐκοῦν ἀδύνατον ἦν τῇ εὐαγγελικῇ παραμεμῖχθαι ἱστορίᾳ καὶ τῆς ἀειπαρθένου τὴν κοίμησιν, ἅτε πολλῷ τῷ χρόνῳ γεγονυῖαν,

πολλὰ λέγειν; δείκνυσι διὰ τῶν αὐτοῦ λόγων ὁ θεσπέσιος ∆ιονύσιος ὡς ἅπας σχεδὸν τῶν ἀποστόλων ὁ θίασος καὶ
