a man makes gods for himself, and these are not gods? Therefore, behold, I will show them my hand in this time, and I will make known to them also my power, and they will know that I am the Lord.” 5.30.2 Lord prays to another Lord, that is, to the Father and God of all things, in which, beginning, he says: “O Lord, my strength,” and what follows. And it clearly prophesies the conversion of the gentiles from their manifold idolatry to piety toward God. Since the doctrine concerning the Father and the Son has been clearly defined in the fifth book of the Evangelical Demonstration, and it has been agreed that there is one God over all, and a second substance after him has been demonstrated, which is the leader of all created things, which the divine oracles proclaimed to be the firstborn wisdom of God, and the only-begotten Son, and God from God, and the angel of great counsel, and the ruler of the heavenly hosts, and the minister of the Father, yea, and Lord of all things, and the Word of God and the power of God, if at present the prophetic testimonies should appear, which proclaim beforehand that God is about to come among men, it is clear to anyone to whom the reference of the thing signified should be made, especially since previously the God Word, in the form and shape of a man, appeared to the God-beloved ones around Abraham under the name of Lord and God, having made visions to men. 6.Prooem.2 Come then, let us see how the oracles of the Hebrews so clearly revealed beforehand that sometimes a Lord, and sometimes a God would descend to men and again ascend, and the reasons for the descent. But note that some things are said through riddles, and some more plainly. 6.Prooem.3 I think, therefore, that the things said obscurely were delivered in a veiled manner for the sake of those of the circumcision, because of the grim things prophesied against them; for which reason it was likely that they would have even destroyed the scripture, if it had openly signified their final rejection. Thus at least the story holds that they plotted against the prophets themselves, because of the rebukes they made against them. 6.Prooem.4 But the clear prophecies most brightly contain the calling of the gentiles, announcing the promises of good things according to piety not to the nation of the Jews, but to all men throughout the whole world.
