Such then is the hypothesis of this falsely named knowledge, which sprang up during the times indicated. 7.32.1 At this time, Felix had presided over the church of the Romans for five years when Eutychianus succeeded him; and when he had not continued for ten whole months, he left his office to Gaius, our contemporary; and when he had presided for about fifteen years, Marcellinus was appointed his successor, whom the persecution also overtook. 7.32.2 During their time, Timaeus succeeded Domnus in the episcopate of Antioch, and he was succeeded by Cyrillus, our contemporary; in his time we knew Dorotheus, a learned man, who was honored with the presbyterate at Antioch. He was a lover of the beautiful in divine things, and took great interest in the Hebrew language, so as to read the Hebrew Scriptures with understanding. 7.32.3 He was a man of the finest liberal education, and was not without a share in Greek preparatory training, but he was otherwise a eunuch by nature, having been so from his very birth, so that the emperor, as if it were something strange, on this account became acquainted with him and honored him with an appointment over the purple dye-works at Tyre. 7.32.4 We heard him expounding the Scriptures with moderation in the church. After Cyrillus, Tyrannus succeeded to the episcopate of the parish of Antioch; in his time the siege of the churches reached its height. 7.32.5 Eusebius, a native of the city of Alexandria, succeeded Socrates as head of the parish in Laodicea; the cause of his removal was the affair of Paul; on account of which, having set foot in Syria, he was prevented from returning home by those there who were zealous in divine matters, having become a wonderful example of piety in our time, as is easy to see from the previously quoted words of Dionysius. 7.32.6 Anatolius was appointed his successor, a good man, they say, succeeding a good man, an Alexandrian by birth, and for his learning and education in Greek philosophy had carried off the first place among the most celebrated men of our time, having reached the summit in arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and in other dialectical or physical theory, as well as in rhetorical studies; for this reason, report has it that he was considered worthy by the citizens there to establish the school of the succession of Aristotle in Alexandria. 7.32.7 They relate countless other exploits of his during the siege of the Brucheium at Alexandria, as he was esteemed by all those in authority with special privilege, but for the sake of an example, I shall mention only this. 7.32.8 When the grain, they say, failed the besieged, so that the famine became more unbearable for them than the enemy outside, the person mentioned being present, devised something like this. Since the other part of the city was allied with the Roman army and thus happened to be free from siege, and Eusebius—for he was still there then before his removal to Syria—being in the unbesieged part, and having great renown and a famous name even with the Roman general, Anatolius sent and informed him about those who were perishing from famine in the siege. 7.32.9 When he learned this, he asked the Roman general, as a very great favor, to grant safety to the deserters from the enemy, and having obtained his request, he made it known to Anatolius. And he, immediately accepting the promise, gathered a council of the Alexandrians, and at first urged them all to give a friendly right hand to the Romans, but when he perceived that they were growing wild at his words, he said, "But I do not think that you will ever contradict this, if I should advise you to send out of the gates the superfluous and in no way useful to us—old women and children and old men—to go wherever they might wish. For why in vain do we keep among us those who are about to die? And why do we wear out with famine the crippled and those with mutilated bodies, when we ought to be feeding only men and youths, and husbanding the necessary grain for those fit to guard the city?" 7.32.10 By some such means
