having persuaded the council with arguments, he was the first to rise and propose a vote to dismiss from the city every class of person unfit for military service, whether men or women, because even for those who remained and lingered uselessly in the city there could be no hope of safety, as they would be destroyed by famine. 7.32.11 And when all the rest in the council had assented to this, he saved nearly all of the besieged, first those from the church, and then taking care for others of every age throughout the city to escape, not only those specified in the vote, but on this pretext, thousands of others as well, who, secretly dressed in women's clothes, went out of the gates at night by his arrangement and made for the Roman army. There Eusebius received them all, distressed as they were from the long siege, like a father and a physician, and restored them with every kind of forethought and treatment. 7.32.12 The church in Laodicea was thought worthy of two such pastors in succession, who by divine providence, after the aforementioned war, came here from the city of the Alexandrians. 7.32.13 Very many treatises were diligently composed by Anatolius, and so many have come down to us, through which it is possible to learn both his eloquence and his great learning; in which he especially sets forth his opinions concerning the Pascha, from which it might be necessary to make mention at the present time. From the canons of Anatolius concerning the Pascha: 7.32.14 "Therefore, in the first year, the new moon of the first month, which is the beginning of the whole nineteen-year cycle, is, according to the Egyptians, the 20th of Phamenoth; but according to the months of the Macedonians, the 22nd of Dystrus; and as the Romans would say, the eleventh before the Kalends of April. 7.32.15 And the sun is found on the said 20th of Phamenoth not only to have entered the first segment, but already to be passing the fourth day in it. This segment they are accustomed to call the first dodecatemorion, and the equinoctial, and the beginning of months, and the head of the cycle, and the starting-point of the course of the planets; and the one before this, the last of months, and the twelfth segment, and the last dodecatemorion, and the end of the planets' period. For which reason we say that those who place the first month in it, and take the fourteenth of the Pascha according to it, err not in a small nor in a random way. 7.32.16 And this statement is not ours, but was known to the Jews of old and was especially observed by them before Christ; and it can be learned from what is said by Philo, Josephus, and Musaeus; and not only by these, but also by the two even more ancient Agathobuli, surnamed 'the Masters' of the great Aristobulus, who was numbered among the Seventy who interpreted the sacred and divine Hebrew scriptures for Ptolemy Philadelphus and his father, and addressed exegetical books of the law of Moses to the same kings. 7.32.17 These men, resolving the questions in Exodus, say that all alike ought to sacrifice the Paschal victim after the vernal equinox, in the middle of the first month; and that this is found when the sun is passing through the first segment of the solar, or as some of them have named it, the zodiacal circle. But Aristobulus adds that for the feast of the Passover it was necessary not only for the sun to be passing through the equinoctial segment, but the moon as well. 7.32.18 For since there are two equinoctial segments, the one vernal, the other autumnal, and they are diametrically opposite one another, and since the day of the Passover is given as the fourteenth of the month after evening, the moon will hold a position opposite and diametrically to the sun, as can indeed be seen at the full moons, and the one, the sun, will be in the vernal equinoctial segment, and the other, the moon, will necessarily be in the autumnal equinoctial one. 7.32.19 I know many other things said by them, some plausible, others proceeding according to authoritative proofs, by which
