and after bitterly torturing Isaiah, he exiled him, and after castrating Alexander, he paraded him on a camp-bed; and immediately the same emperor ordered that those found engaging in pederasty be castrated. And at that very time many who slept with men were arrested, and having been castrated, they died. And from then on there was fear among those who suffered from the desire for males. And at that time Pompeiopolis in Mysia suffered from the wrath of God; for when the tremor happened suddenly the earth was split and half of the city was swallowed up with its inhabitants, and they were under the ground, and their sound was carried to those who had been saved. And the same emperor made great efforts for the excavation 437 to save those who were under the ground, and likewise for those who lived and for the city, for its renewal. And the same emperor renewed the laws enacted by the preceding emperors, and having made new laws, he sent them to every city, so that a magistrate, in the place where he holds his office, should not build a house or buy property, unless some relative of his is there, so that co-owners might not be coerced or someone be forced on account of his official protection to dispose of it to him. Likewise also concerning natural children, that they should inherit according to the law of the emperor Anastasius. And concerning the one who inherits, that it be permitted for him to renounce the inheritance whenever he wishes, and not be barred by time. And concerning witnesses, that private citizens be compelled to testify even unwillingly. And the same emperor remitted the Gothic wood-oil tax, relieving the taxpayers from the burden. And during his reign two generals of the Huns, having attacked with a multitude Scythia and Moesia, while Baduarius and Justinus were the Roman *stratelates* there, and when they went out against the Huns, and a battle took place, Justinus was slain in the war; and in his place 438 Constantiolus, the son of Florentius, became *stratelates* of Moesia. and the Huns came, plundering as far as Thrace; and the *stratelates* Constantiolus and Godilas and the *stratelates* of Illyricum, Ascum the Hun, whom the emperor Justinian had received in holy baptism, went out against them, and when the Huns were intercepted in the war, and many of them were falling, all the booty was recovered, and the Romans became victorious, having killed the two kings. and as they were returning, they were met by other Huns; and joining battle out of fatigue, and the Roman generals being weaker, they fled; and the Huns, pursuing, speared the fleeing Roman commanders. and Godilas, drawing his own sword, cut the spear and freed himself, but Constantiolus was brought from his horse to the ground; and Ascum was also captured. and having taken the two captives, they gave back Constantiolus, having received from the emperor of the Romans ten thousand *nomismata*, and he went up to Constantinople; but keeping Ascum the Hun they departed to their own country with many other captives; and for the rest, the Thracian regions were at peace. And at that time the patrician Probus, who was a relative of the emperor Anastasius, was accused of having reviled the same emperor Justinian. and when a *silentium conventus* was held for the purpose of a written record 439 of the proceedings, and when all the proceedings had been read to the emperor after the same Probus had been convicted before the entire senate, the same emperor took the proceedings and tore them up, saying to the same Probus that, "I forgive you the sin which you committed against me; pray, therefore, that God may also forgive you." And the same emperor was praised by the senate. And at that time a certain Eulalius, count of the domestics, having become poor from being wealthy
