takes up the ministry; but not long after he had fallen asleep, Hermon, the last of those up to the persecution in our time, succeeds to the apostolic throne which has been preserved there until now. 7.32.30 And in Alexandria, Theonas succeeds Maximus, who had been bishop for eighteen years after the death of Dionysius; in his time, Achillas was well-known in Alexandria, having been deemed worthy of the presbytery at the same time as Pierius, having been entrusted with the school of sacred faith, having demonstrated a very rare work of philosophy and a genuine manner of evangelical life second to none. 7.32.31 After Theonas had served for nineteen years, Peter succeeds to the episcopate of Alexandria, he himself also having been especially distinguished for twelve whole years, of which he led the church for not even three full years before the persecution, and for the rest of his life, he conducted himself with a more intense asceticism and also took conspicuous care for the common benefit of the churches. Having described the succession of the apostles in seven whole books, in this eighth writing we think it one of the most necessary things to hand down to the knowledge of those after us also the events of our own time, which are worthy of no ordinary record, and our account will begin from this point. 8.1.1 How much and what kind of glory and freedom of speech the doctrine of piety toward the God of the universe, which was proclaimed to the world through Christ, was esteemed worthy of among all men, both Greeks and barbarians, before the persecution in our time, is greater than we are able to describe adequately; 8.1.2 but proofs of this would be the friendly dispositions of the rulers toward our people, to whom they entrusted even the governorships of the provinces, releasing them from the anxiety about sacrificing, on account of the great friendliness they maintained toward their doctrine. 8.1.3 What need is there to speak about those in the imperial households and the rulers over all? who allowed their own household members to speak freely in their presence concerning the divine word and life, with their wives and children and servants, all but permitting them even to boast in the freedom of their faith; whom they considered exceptionally and more acceptable than their fellow servants, 8.1.4 such was that Dorotheus, most well-disposed and most faithful to them of all and for these reasons especially most honored beyond those in high offices and governorships, and with him the celebrated Gorgonius and as many as were likewise deemed worthy of the same honor as these on account of the word of God; 8.1.5 and what honor the rulers in each church received from all
