neither wealth, nor youth, nor noble birth, nor glory, nor friendship of the world, nor kindred blood, nor the choice of men, nor anything else of the delightful and beautiful things under heaven persuades you to be stuck in the mire of this life, but you choose that life, the one in celibacy and poverty and renunciation of all things; for this is your will to live as a solitary. Blessed is the God who has betrothed you through virginity and is preparing the heavenly bridal chamber for you. Except that even while being outside the monastic life, you do the works of true monastics, chanting, rising early at the appointed hours, fasting, praying, raising orphans, giving alms, wearing simple clothes, if you are doing anything else for the one who sees in secret, which are the works of a solitary life. Yet may the Lord grant to you according to your heart and fulfill all your counsel, you shoots of a good root, you blood-sisters of a good brother, you brides of the heavenly chamber. Pray also for me, I beseech you. 201 {1To Antony, hegoumen of the Auletou monastery}1 And again I write to your piety, being eager with you and rejoicing with you in your pains and toils, persecutions and excommunications for Christ's sake; the time has brought us to become crowned victors, athletes, confessors, and indeed persecutors, Christ-fighters; for those who fight against the icon of Christ, what else could they be than persecutors of the truth and rebels against Christ? For the honor and dishonor of the icon passes over to the prototype. Let us bear, then, honored father, the ill-treatment from our enemies, the reward for which is eternal life and exultation with the martyrs. You are praiseworthy, man of God, because out of almost all the hegumens in the city and before the city you alone went forth, braving danger for piety, becoming a light for those in darkness, a refutation of the impious of the same rank. What is the profit in clinging for a few days to a monastery, to glory, to temporary comfort, and being carried off with heretics to eternal shame? But how good and blessed it is to toil for a short while and to stand apart from all one's own, or perhaps even to give up the body, and to find God well-disposed and the kingdom of heaven. Thus as the least I was moved to speak, asking you, most holy father, to make remembrance of me, the sinner, that I might be delivered from the passions of dishonor and be ready for whatever God may yet command me to endure for his name's sake. 202 {1To Arkadios the monk}1 I have heard how excellently you have arranged your affairs, beloved brother, and I glorified God; what is this? That you were not led astray with those who have betrayed the truth through communion with the heretics, even if they be of the rank of superiors, but having torn yourself away from the God-separating communion, you have hidden yourself in mountains and caves, living with attendants, choosing rather to be ill-treated and to suffer hardship than for a temporary pleasure to give up eternal life, having as your leader and teacher Christ our God, for whose sake you also suffer. Thanks, then, to him who granted you to be of perfect mind; of you the world is truly not worthy, as you live in a super-mundane way according to the divine apostle, yours is truly the blessing of Christ, being persecuted for righteousness' sake. And indeed it was fitting that the one who for the love of God left the greatest of earthly dignities and the royal courts, I would add also the beauties of the body and abundance of possessions, should not be captured ignobly and inhumanly, but should prefer the divine things and take to the desert and mountain regions; in which it is possible for you to live as an angel, breathing God, seeing heaven, walking about with angels. Endure, brother, the Lord who has called you, and he will exalt you in greatest glory, both as an example of virtue to those in this life and for an inheritance of the good things laid up in hope for those who love him. And remember us, the unworthy and those who love you always, that we may pass from life in a way pleasing to Christ in the present struggle. I greet most warmly those with you. 203 {1To the Komes}1 I hear tell, man of God, of the
