may be kept at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful. Spirit, he says, is the gift which each one received through baptism. For then each of those being baptized received a gift, and performed signs. And one spoke in tongues, another prophesied; another healed the sick, another cast out demons, another raised the dead, another did something else. He prays, therefore, that this gift, which he also calls Spirit, may remain whole in them, so that they may in no way be deprived of the working of the Holy Spirit. He who calls you, who also will do it. Brothers, pray for us. Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. He who called you, he says, Jesus, will make you to become whole and blameless. I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brothers. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen. Since the Epistle contains rebukes, lest the disorderly, upon receiving the Epistle, might hide it, he charges them for the Epistle to be read. TO THE SECOND EPISTLE TO THE THESSALONIANS. CHAPTER ONE. Paul, and Silvanus, and Timothy, to the Church of the Thessalonians, in God

our Father and the Lord 95.920 Jesus Christ: we are bound to thank God always for you, brothers, as it is fitting, because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you all abounds toward each other, so that we ourselves boast of you in the churches of God for your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you endure, which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you also suffer. And the Apostle needed a second Epistle to the Thessalonians, not to exhort them in anything contributing, either to faith (for he says, your faith grows exceedingly); or to a virtuous life; especially since even in the first Epistle, he said they had no need of teaching, being taught by God. What then is the reason for the Epistle? So that they might not be troubled hearing that the day of the second coming of the Lord is at hand. For some of the false teachers were proclaiming this. Therefore it became necessary for him to recount the signs before that day; such as those concerning the apostasy, and concerning the end of the Roman empire, and those concerning the Antichrist himself. For these things must happen first, he says, and then that day will come. See how great the progress of the Thessalonians is, that the Apostle sends up thanksgivings for them, not simply that they believe, but that their faith grows exceedingly, and not simply that they love, but that they abound in the matter. This, he says, is our boast: your patience, your faith, the persecutions, the tribulations. You endure all these things, he says, knowing that you will receive their end, the kingdom of heaven. Since it is a righteous thing with God to repay with tribulation those who trouble you, and to you who are troubled. Instead of, since indeed it is righteous. And see how he comforted and relieved them, by suggesting vengeance for them; which is what those who suffer unjustly especially hear with pleasure and pray to see. Rest with us at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with his mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus: who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power, when he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe. And from another part he comforted them by making them partners of the apostles. For you will receive, he says, rest with us; and the true

Τοῦτο γάρ τινες τῶν ψευδοδιδασκάλων ἐκήρυττον. ∆ιὸ καὶ ἀναγκαίως γέγονεν αὐτῷ τὰ σημεῖα διηγεῖσθαι τὰ πρὸ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης· οἷον τὰ περὶ τῆς ἀποστασίας, καὶ περὶ τοῦ τέλους τῆς βασιλείας Ῥωμαίων, καὶ τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ τοῦ Ἀντιχρίστου. Ταῦτα γὰρ πρῶτα δεῖ γενέσθαι, φησὶν, εἶτα οὕτως ἐκείνην ἐλθεῖν. Ὅρα πόση τῶν Θεσσαλονικέων ἡ προκοπὴ, ὡς καὶ χαριστήρια ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀναπέμπειν τὸν Ἀπόστολον, οὐχ ὅτι ἁπλῶς πιστεύουσιν, ἀλλ' ὅτι ὑπεραυξάνει ἡ πίστις αὐτῶν, καὶ ὅτι οὐχ ἁπλῶς ἀγαπῶσιν, ἀλλὰ καὶ πλεονάζουσιν ἐν τῷ πράγματι. Τοῦτο δὲ, φησὶν, καύχημα ἡμέτερον, ἡ ὑπομονὴ ὑμῶν, ἡ πίστις, οἱ διωγμοὶ, αἱ θλίψεις. Τούτων δὲ πάντων ἀνέχεσθε, φησὶν, εἰδότες ὡς τὸ τέλος αὐτῶν κομιεῖσθε, βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν. Εἴπερ δίκαιον παρὰ Θεῷ ἀνταποδοῦναι τοῖς θλίβουσιν ὑμᾶς θλίψιν, καὶ ὑμῖν τοῖς θλιβομένοις. Ἀντὶ τοῦ, ἐπείπερ δίκαιον.
