What then do we men do, anything other than oppress those who are weaker? how does he differ from the last fish, who with gluttonous love of wealth hides the weak in the insatiable bosoms of his greed? That one had the things of the poor man; you, taking a portion of these, made it part of your abundance, more unjust than the unjust, more greedy than the greedy. See that the same end does not await you, a hook somewhere, or a basket, or a net. For in any case, we too, having gone through many injustices, will not escape the final punishment. He who judges the wealth gathered from injustice to be a sufficient occasion for him to be strong and to rule, is like a sick man who places his well-being in the abundance of his disease. If you see one of the super-rich, do not call his life blessed. If money flows around him from many abundant springs, do not accept his abundance. The nature of wealth is fluid; it runs past its possessors more swiftly than a torrent; it is its nature to pass from one to another. Just as a river flowing from on high approaches those standing on the bank, and as soon as it touches, it immediately departs, so also the ease of wealth has a most swift and slippery presence, being accustomed to pass from some to others. Today the field belongs to this man, and tomorrow to another, and after a little while to another. Look at the houses in the 95.1504 city, how many names they have already taken on since they were built, being called now after one owner, now after another; and gold, always flowing through the hands of its possessor, passes on to another, and from that one to another. I fear, O Christ, that I too, needing Your hand, may go away wanting, by my own laws For what one has not given, let him not even hope for Do not love wealth, unless it is to help the poor. Let us not mix our wealth with the tears of others, by which it will be consumed as by rust and moth, or, to use the words of Scripture, it will be vomited out. He who has much, perhaps even beyond expectation—for this is already most unjust—and is constrained by his many storehouses, filling some and tearing down others, in order to build larger ones for future harvests, not knowing that he is snatched away before his hopes are realized, and he will give an account of his abundance and his ostentation, having become a bad steward of others' goods. Let us recognize the cause of the evil: whence have the harvests withered, the storehouses been put to shame, and the pasturing of flocks ceased; the good things of the earth have become few; the plains were not filled with fatness, but with gloom; the valleys did not abound with grain, but were lamented; the mountains did not drip with sweetness as they will later for the just, but received the curse of Gilboa from the opposite things. Such is the wealth of the impious. Such are the harvests of those who sow evilly. And yet one of us has oppressed a poor man, and has snatched away a portion of land, and has wickedly overstepped a boundary, either by stealing or by tyrannizing, and has joined house to house, and field to field, that he might take something from his neighbor, and has striven to have no one else, as if he were to dwell alone upon the earth. Another has defiled the land with usury and excessive interest, gathering where he did not sow, and reaping where he did not scatter; cultivating not the land, but the need of the needy; another has deprived God, who has given all things, of the firstfruits of the threshing floor and winepress, and has become at once both ungrateful and foolish, neither giving thanks for what he has received, nor securing the future through gratitude. Another has not pitied the widow and the orphan, nor has he shared bread and a little food with the needy, or rather, with Christ who is fed through the feeding of the little ones. Another has turned aside the way of the humble, and has perverted the just man in unjust things. Another has sacrificed to his own dragnet which gathers much, and having the plunder of the poor in his house 95.1505, either did not remember God, or remembered Him badly. Saying, 'Blessed be the Lord, for we have become rich;' and he took up lawlessness, as if having all things from himself, for which things he shall be punished. Τοιοῦτος ὁ πλοῦτος τῶν ἀσεβῶν. Τοιαῦτα τῶν κακῶς σπειρόντων τὰ γεώργια. Ὁ μέντοι ἡμῶν ἐξέθλιψε πένητα, καὶ μοῖραν γῆς παρεσπάσατο, καὶ ὅριον ὑπερέβη κακῶς, ἢ κλέψας, ἢ τυραννήσας, καὶ συνῆψεν οἰκίαν πρὸς οἰκίαν, καὶ ἀγρὸν πρὸς ἀγρὸν, ἵνα τοῦ πλησίον ἀφέληταί τι, καὶ μηδένα ἔχειν ἐφιλονείκησε, ὡς μόνως οἰκήσων ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
