As for our sake he underwent birth through a woman, he appeared in life, showing himself at his baptism, that he who appeared is God and man, he suffered for us by your permission and died and rose by your power; wherefore also celebrating the festival of the resurrection on the Lord's day, we rejoice in him who conquered death, but brought to light life and incorruption; for through him you brought the nations to yourself for a peculiar people, the true Israel, the beloved of God, the one who sees God. For you, Lord, both brought our fathers out of the land of Egypt and rescued them from the iron furnace and from clay and brick-making, you delivered them from the hand of Pharaoh and those under him, and led them through the sea as through dry land, and bore with their ways in the wilderness with all kinds of good things. You gave them the law of ten commandments, spoken by your voice and written by your hand; you commanded them to keep the Sabbath, not giving a pretext for idleness, but an occasion for piety, for the knowledge of your power, for the hindrance of evils as having confined them in a holy enclosure for the sake of instruction, for the exultation of the week; for this reason one week and seven weeks and the seventh month and the seventh year and, in its cycle, the fiftieth year for release. So that men might have no excuse to plead ignorance, for this reason you permitted them to rest every Sabbath, so that no one should wish to utter a word in anger from his mouth on the day of the Sabbaths; for the Sabbath is the cessation of creation, the completion of the world, a searching of the laws, a thankful praise to God for what he bestowed on men. But the Lord's day is pre-eminent above all these, pointing to the Mediator himself, the Provider, the Lawgiver, the cause of the resurrection, the firstborn of all creation, the God Word and man born of Mary alone without a man, who lived a holy life, who was crucified under Pontius Pilate and died and rose from the dead, as the Lord's day commands you, Master, to offer thanksgiving for all things. For this is the grace given by you, which by its greatness has covered every good deed. You who fulfilled the promises through the prophets and had mercy on Sion and pitied Jerusalem by exalting the throne of David your servant in her midst through the birth of Christ who was born of his seed according to the flesh from a virgin alone; you yourself also now,
