another, and he was baptized in Blachernae by Sergius the patriarch. ϛʹ. κζʹ. ζʹ. ζʹ. ζʹ. In this year the Persians took all of Egypt and Alexandria and Libya and as far as Ethiopia, and having taken many captives and very much booty and money, they returned. But Carthage they were not able to take, but having left a guard to besiege it, they departed. ζʹ. κηʹ. ηʹ. ηʹ. ηʹ. In this year the Persians marched against Carthage and took it by war. In the same year on the first of the month of January, in the 5th indiction, Constantine the young became consul, also known as Heraclius and son of Heraclius; and he appointed as caesar Constantine the little, his own brother, who was born of Heraclius and Martina. ηʹ. κθʹ. θʹ. θʹ. θʹ. In this year again Heraclius sent ambassadors to Persia to Chosroes asking for peace. But Chosroes again sent them away, having said: "I will not spare you until you deny the crucified one, whom you say is a god, and you worship the sun." θʹ. λʹ. ιʹ. ιʹ. ιʹ. In this year the Avars marched against Thrace. And Heraclius, having sent ambassadors to them, asked for peace; and when the Chagan agreed to make it, the emperor went out outside the Long Wall with all the royal bodyguard and many great gifts to receive the Chagan, having received pledges from him to make a peace treaty with one another. But that barbarian, having broken both the agreements and the oaths, suddenly and tyrannically moved against the emperor. And the emperor, being astounded by the 302 unexpectedness of the event, returned to the city as a fugitive. And the barbarian, having taken both the royal baggage and bodyguard and as many as he was able to capture, returned, having plundered many regions of Thrace, which were unexpectedly deceived by the hope of peace. Years of the world 6111. Years of the divine incarnation 611. Emperor of the Romans, Heraclius, years 31. 10. King of the Persians, Chosroes, years 39. 31. Bishop of Constantinople, Sergius, years 29. 11. Bishop of Jerusalem, Zacharias, years 22. 11. Bishop of Alexandria, George, years 14. 1. In this year Heraclius, having sent ambassadors to the Chagan of the Avars, accused him concerning the lawless acts that had been committed by him and urged him towards peace. For, intending to campaign against Persia, he wished to be at peace with the Chagan. But the Chagan, respecting the emperor's good will, professed to repent and promised to make peace; and having agreed on a pact, the ambassadors returned in peace. In the same year the Persians took Ancyra of Galatia by war. ιαʹ. λβʹ. ιβʹ. ιβʹ. βʹ. In this year Chosroes hardened his yoke upon all men to bloodshed and taxation. For, puffed up by victory, he was no longer able to remain in a normal state. Then Heraclius, taking up zeal for God and having made peace with the Avars, as he thought, transferred the armies of Europe to Asia and intended with the cooperation of God to proceed against Persia. ιβʹ. λγʹ. ιγʹ. ιγʹ. γʹ. In this year on the fourth of the month of April, in the 10th indiction, after the emperor Heraclius had celebrated the feast of Easter, immediately on the evening of the second day he set out against Persia. And taking the money of the pious houses 303 as a loan, being possessed by want, he also took from the great church both candelabra and other service vessels, having minted very many nomismata and miliaresia. And he left his own son with the patriarch Sergius in Constantinople to manage affairs with Bonosus the patrician, a prudent man and intelligent and experienced in all things. And he also wrote to the Chagan of the Avars entreaties to assist the affairs of the Romans, as one who had made a treaty of friendship with him, and he named him guardian of his own son. And departing from the reigning city, he went out towards the so-called Pylae, making his journey by ship. And from there, having arrived at the lands of the themes, he gathered the armies and added to them
