That the things of God are manifest only to those to whom God is wholly united through the participation of the Holy Spirit. (225)
From where do you come, how do you enter, I mean, within the cell secured on every side? For this too is strange, beyond reason and beyond mind. But that you should suddenly become wholly within me and shine forth and be seen full of light like a full moon, this renders me mindless, speechless, O my God. I know that you are the one who has come to enlighten those who sit in darkness, and I am beside myself and go out of my mind and words, because I see a strange wonder, surpassing all creation, all nature, all reason. Nevertheless, I will now say to all, (226) what you grant me to speak: O entire race of men, kings and rulers, rich and poor, monastics and laymen, every tongue of the earthborn, hear me now as I speak, recounting the magnitude of the philanthropy of God! I have sinned against him as no other man in the world; let no one suppose me to say these things out of humility, for in truth I have sinned beyond all men in every act of sin, to put it to you concisely,
