having him in your heart and do not let him go with your whole soul and (343) you pray for him from your heart, behold, you have indeed campaigned against Christ, acting contrary to his commandments and you have become his enemy, and you have destroyed your own soul, having sealed and confirmed your previous sins and having made them indelible. If someone strikes you again on the right cheek, and then you do not turn to him the other also, but rather strike him back, you have indeed become a soldier and servant of the adversary Satan, and you have struck not only your brother, but also through him the one who said not to strike, but rather to offer the other to him as well. And if someone takes gold from you or anything else secretly or openly, perhaps having borrowed or seized it, and then is unwilling to give it to you, being malicious or even in need, and you do not bear it thankfully and without resentment, but you drag the one who took it to the courts and hire advocates, seeking help from men, and you stand in court, being annoyed, grieved, leading and dragging your brother, using oaths and perjuries and preparing him to swear and perjure himself and lie, which is worse than all other things, and in addition to these things you hand him over to prisons and you do and perform all things, so that you might receive what is owed to you, how are you not openly an enemy of yourself as well?
For he who is commanded to visit those in prison and to serve them according to his ability, from him who takes your things not to demand them back, and to him who wishes to sue you and take your tunic to give him your cloak as well, and not only this, but also to lay down his own soul to death for the sake of God's commandment, when he goes to law over lost money, transgressing the command of God, being grieved, (344) annoyed and subjecting your brother to prisons, are you not clearly mad, provoking God and warring with him and depriving yourself of eternal life? He therefore who wishes to shepherd the flock of Christ and to feed its sheep through the teaching of the things that have been said, so that he might make them well-fed in righteousness and very fruitful, how then can he be anxious about fields at the same time and take thought for possessions, both to claim them and to ward off those who wish to do them injustice and harm, and sometimes to go to judges, and other times to resist with contradictions and lies, and at times even to be the cause of oaths and perjuries? For it is necessary, even if he himself speaks the truth, for his opponents to lie and to swear and to perjure themselves openly. But if these things happen in this way, how will they be bearable to a God-loving soul, or how will they be pleasing to God who said: “But I say to you, do not swear at all, but let your yes be yes, and your no, no; for what is more than these is from the evil one,” and again: “Amen, amen, I say to you that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account for it in the day of judgment”?
Therefore, if indeed we persuade you, being men, to obey the truth, Christ, and these words, do not then pursue offices and the leadership of others for the sake of human glory and luxury and bodily enjoyment, fearing the judgment of God and that dreadful decision which God pronounced through the prophet Joel against those who unworthily shepherd his sheep: “Thus says, he says, the Lord Adonai: O shepherds of Israel, do the shepherds not feed themselves? Do not the shepherds feed the sheep? Behold, you eat the milk and you clothe yourselves with the wool and you slaughter the fatling, and my sheep you did not feed. (345) The weak you have not strengthened, and the sick you have not healed, and the broken you have not bound up, and that which was in a bad way you have not made whole, and the straying you have not turned back, and the lost you have not sought, and the strong you have worn down with toil and disciplined with force and in sport, and my sheep were scattered because there was no
