that his Son became man for us, that he might save us, that he endured the incarnation, becoming obedient in all things, to preach the kingdom of heaven, remission of sins, resurrection of the dead. For these things he worships him, the only-begotten God, with him and through him, giving thanks to him for undertaking death on behalf of all through the cross, of which the baptism of regeneration has given a type. And he glorifies God, because in the name of Christ, God the Lord of all in the Holy Spirit did not cast off the race of men, but at different times he made different provisions, for Adam himself in paradise, first giving paradise as a dwelling for the sake of delight, then making a commandment for the sake of providence, and when he sinned, justly casting him out, but in goodness not casting him off completely, but also variously disciplining his descendants in succession; for whom at the end of the age he sent his Son to become man for men and to undertake all human passions without sin. Therefore let the priest now also entreat him at the baptism and say: Look down from heaven and sanctify this water, and grant grace and power, so that the one being baptized according to the command of your Christ may be crucified with him and die with him and be buried with him and rise with him to the adoption which is in him, by being dead to sin, but alive to righteousness. And after this, having baptized him in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, let him anoint with myrrh, adding: O Lord God, unbegotten and without master, the Lord of all, who has granted the fragrance of the knowledge of the gospel to be sweet-smelling among all the nations; do you also now grant this myrrh to become effective upon the one being baptized, so that the sweet fragrance of your Christ may remain firm and steadfast in him, and having died with him, he may also rise with him and live with him. Let him say these things and what follows them; for this is the power of the laying on of hands for each one. For if some such invocation is not made over each of these by the devout priest, the one being baptized goes down into the water only, like the Jews, and puts off only the filth of the body, not the filth of the soul. After this let him stand and pray the prayer which the Lord taught us. But it is necessary that the one who has risen

ἐνανθρωπῆσαι τὸν Υἱὸν αὐτοῦ δι' ἡμᾶς, ἵνα ἡμᾶς σώσῃ, ὅτι ἠνέσχετο τῆς ἐνανθρωπήσεως ὑπήκοον αὐτὸν γενέσθαι ἐν πᾶσι, κηρῦξαι βασιλείαν οὐρανῶν, ἄφεσιν ἁμαρτιῶν, νεκρῶν ἀνάστασιν Ἐπὶ τούτοις προσκυνεῖ αὐτὸν τὸν μονογενῆ Θεὸν μετ' αὐτὸν καὶ δι' αὐτόν, εὐχαριστῶν αὐτῷ τῷ ἀναδέξασθαι αὐτὸν τὸν ὑπὲρ πάντων θάνατον διὰ τοῦ σταυροῦ, οὗ τύπον ἔδωκεν τὸ βάπτισμα τῆς παλιγγενεσίας. ∆οξάζει τε, ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Χριστοῦ Θεὸς ὁ τῶν ὅλων Κύριος ἐν ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι οὐκ ἀπέρριψεν τὸ τῶν ἀνθρώπων γένος, ἀλλὰ διαφόροις καιροῖς διαφόρους προνοίας ἐποιήσατο, τῷ τε Ἀδὰμ αὐτῷ ἐν παραδείσῳ πρῶτον μὲν τρυφῆς λόγῳ τὸν παράδεισον οἰκητήριον δούς, ἔπειτα προ νοίας λόγῳ ἐντολὴν ποιησάμενος, ἁμαρτόντα δὲ δικαιοσύνῃ ἐξώσας, ἀγαθότητι δὲ μὴ ἀπορρίψας εἰς τὸ παντελές, ἀλλὰ καὶ τοὺς ἐξ αὐτοῦ κατὰ διαδοχὴν διαφόρως παιδεύσας· δι' ὃν ἐπὶ τὸ τέρμα τοῦ αἰῶνος ἀπέστειλεν τὸν Υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἄνθρωπον γενέσθαι δι' ἀνθρώπους καὶ πάντα τὰ ἀνθρώπινα πάθη ἀναδέξασθαι χωρὶς ἁμαρτίας. Aὐτὸν οὖν καὶ νῦν παρακαλείτω ὁ ἱερεὺς πρὸς τῷ βαπτίσματι καὶ λεγέτω, ὅτι· Κάτιδε ἐξ οὐρανοῦ καὶ ἁγίασον τὸ ὕδωρ τοῦτο, δὸς δὲ χάριν καὶ δύναμιν, ὥστε τὸν βαπτιζόμενον κατ' ἐντολὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ σου αὐτῷ συσταυρωθῆναι καὶ συναποθανεῖν καὶ συνταφῆναι καὶ συναναστῆναι εἰς υἱοθεσίαν τὴν ἐν αὐτῷ, τῷ νεκρωθῆναι μὲν τῇ ἁμαρτίᾳ, ζῆσαι δὲ τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ. Καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο βαπτίσας αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι τοῦ Πατρὸς καὶ τοῦ Υἱοῦ καὶ τοῦ ἁγίου Πνεύματος, χρισάτω μύρῳ ἐπιλέγων· Κύριε ὁ Θεὸς ὁ ἀγέννητος καὶ ἀδέσποτος, ὁ τῶν ὅλων Κύριος, ὁ τὴν ὀσμὴν τῆς γνώσεως τοῦ εὐαγγε λίου ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἔθνεσιν εὔοσμον παρασχόμενος· σὺ καὶ νῦν τοῦτο τὸ μύρον δὸς ἐνεργὲς γενέσθαι ἐπὶ τῷ βαπτι ζομένῳ, ὥστε βέβαιον καὶ πάγιον ἐν αὐτῷ τὴν εὐωδίαν μεῖναι τοῦ Χριστοῦ σου, καὶ συναποθανόντα αὐτὸν συνα ναστῆναι καὶ συζῆσαι αὐτῷ. Ταῦτα καὶ τὰ τούτοις ἀκόλουθα λεγέτω· ἑκάστου γὰρ ἡ δύναμις τῆς χειροθεσίας ἐστὶν αὕτη. Ἐὰν γὰρ μὴ εἰς ἕκαστον τούτων ἐπίκλησις γένηται παρὰ τοῦ εὐσεβοῦς ἱερέως τοιαύτη τις, εἰς ὕδωρ μόνον καταβαίνει ὁ βαπτιζό μενος ὡς οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ ἀποτίθεται μόνον τὸν ·ύπον τοῦ σώματος, οὐ τὸν ·ύπον τῆς ψυχῆς. Μετὰ τοῦτο ἑστὼς προσευχέσθω τὴν εὐχήν, ἣν ἐδίδαξεν ἡμᾶς ὁ Κύριος. Ἀναγκαίως δὲ τὸν ἀναστάντα δεῖ
