Truly, my beloved brothers, as all Scripture loudly proclaims, great necessity, great fear and (384) trembling will seize in that hour those who are slothful and dissolute and lazy like me. But blessed is he, brothers, who is now set beneath all creation, mourning and weeping night and day before God, because he will then stand adorned at His right hand. Blessed is he who hears these things and not only groans, nor from day to day procrastinating runs through the time of his life unprofitably, but who, as soon as he hears the Lord saying, "Repent!", immediately begins the work. For such a one, as an obedient and grateful servant, will be shown mercy and will not be condemned with the disobedient, and now he will be delivered from all the passions, and will become an approved worker of all the virtues, and in the age to come he will delight in the ineffable good things of God with all those who from eternity have pleased Him, which may we all attain by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Concerning repentance and the beginning of a praiseworthy life, how the penitent ought to act each day. In which also about tears and compunction.

Discourse 30. (385) My beloved brothers, hear the power of my words and as

being good counsel for you, receive it gladly and be eager to do it for our common benefit, both mine and yours. For thus, proceeding little by little through what seem to be small things, we advance to more perfect things and become perfect men in Christ.

And the purpose of this discourse is as follows: when you leave the church, do not begin to be distracted by vain and unprofitable things, lest the devil come and, finding you occupied with these, just as a crow immediately snatches a grain of wheat from the field before it is covered by the earth and flies away, so too he might snatch the memory of these words of instruction from your heart and you again remain light and empty of saving teaching; but if any of you has been assigned manual labor or a service to do and to work at, let him go with his head bowed (386) and attending to himself, and while working and serving, let him say to himself:

"Oh, how many days and years of my life I, wretched one, have passed in distraction and laughter! Oh, how I have been made vain hearing the divine Scriptures until now and not at all understanding what is profitable from them! What has this present life profited me? Behold, so and so many years of my life have passed. Who then knows if I will live until tomorrow? For many years I have eaten, I have filled my belly with meats, wine, and much gluttony. I adorned myself with garments, I played and laughed together to my own detriment, I abounded in so many or so many coins and, having spent them, I wasted them on vanities, after this I acquired others again. I used baths to satiety and ointments, I have ridden horses and mules, I have enjoyed many and sumptuous tables, I have envied my neighbor, I have reviled, I have fornicated, I have stolen, I have lied. I associated with famous and rich acquaintances and friends and dwelt with rulers. I acquired a renowned name in life, I reclined on soft beds, I rested this earthly body, I slept to satiety.

Ὄντως, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί, ὡς πᾶσα Γραφή διαρρήδην βοᾷ, μεγάλη ἀνάγκη, μέγας φόβος καί (384) τρόμος λήψεται ἐν τῇ ὥρᾳ ἐκείνῃ τούς κατ᾿ ἐμέ ῥᾳθύμους καί χαύνους καί ὀκνηρούς. Μακάριος δέ ἐστιν, ἀδελφοί, ὁ ὑποκάτω πάσης κτίσεως κείμενος νῦν, πενθῶν τε καί κλαίων νύκτα καί ἡμέραν ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ, ὅτι ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ ἐστολισμένος τότε σταθήσεται. Μακάριος ὁ ταῦτα ἀκούων καί μή μόνον στενάζων, μηδέ ἡμέραν ἐξ ἡμέρας ἀναβαλλόμενος παρατρέχει τόν χρόνον αὐτοῦ τῆς ζωῆς ἀνωφελῶς, ἀλλ᾿ ὁ ἅμα τῷ ἀκοῦσαι τοῦ Κυρίου λέγοντος, "Μετανοεῖτε! ", εὐθύς τοῦ ἔργου ἀρχόμενος. Ὁ τοιοῦτος γάρ ὡς ὑπήκοος καί εὐγνώμων δοῦλος ἐλεηθήσεται καί οὐχί μετά τῶν ἀνηκόων κατακριθήσεται, καί νῦν μέν ἐκ πάντων ἀπαλλαγήσεται τῶν παθῶν, πασῶν δέ τῶν ἀρετῶν ἐργάτης γενήσεται δόκιμος, ἐν δέ τῷ αἰῶνι τῷ μέλλοντι κατατρυφήσει τῶν ἀπορρήτων ἀγαθῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ μετά πάντων τῶν ἀπ᾿ αἰῶνος εὐαρεστησάντων αὐτῷ, ὧν γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν χάριτι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τούς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων. Περί μετανοίας καί ἀρχῆς ἐπαινετοῦ βίου, ὅπως δεῖ τόν μετανοῦντα καθ᾿ ἑκάστην ποιεῖν. Ἐν ᾧ καί περί δακρύων ἅμα καί κατανύξεως.

Λόγος Λ΄. (385) Ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί, ἀκούσατέ μου τῶν λόγων τήν δύναμιν καί ὡς εἰς

ἀγαθήν οὖσαν ὑμῖν συμβουλήν προσδέξασθε ἀσμένως αὐτήν καί ποιῆσαι προθυμήθητε εἰς κοινήν ἐμοῦ τε καί ὑμῶν ὠφέλειαν. Οὕτω γάρ κατά βραχύ διά τῶν δοκούντων μικρῶν βαδίζοντες, ἐπί τά τελεώτερα προκόπτοντες ἀνερχόμεθα καί ἄνδρες γινόμεθα τέλειοι ἐν Χριστῷ.

Ὁ δέ σκοπός τοῦ λόγου ἐστί τοιοῦτος· ἐξερχόμενοι τῆς ἐκκλησίας μή ἄρξησθε μετεωρίζεσθαι εἰς μάταια καί ἀνωφελῆ, ἵνα μή ἐλθών ὁ διάβολος καί ἐν τούτοις ἐνασχολουμένους εὑρίσκων ὑμᾶς, ὥσπερ τις εὐθύς κορώνη τόν κόκκον τοῦ σίτου ἐκ τοῦ πεδίου πρίν ἤ ὑπό τήν γῆν καλυφθῆναι αἴρουσα πέταται, οὕτω καί αὐτός ἄρῃ τήν μνήμην τῶν λόγων τούτων τῆς κατηχήσεως ἐκ τῆς καρδίας ὑμῶν καί πάλιν διαμείνητε κοῦφοι καί κενοί τῆς σωτηρίου διδασκαλίας· ἀλλά εἰ μέν τις ἐξ ὑμῶν ἐργόχειρον ἤ διακονίαν ἐπετράπη ποιεῖν καί ἐργάζεσθαι, ἀπελθέτω κάτω νεύων (386) καί προσέχων ἑαυτῷ, ἐργαζόμενος δέ καί διακονῶν λεγέτω ἐν ἑαυτῷ·

"Ὤ πόσας ἡμέρας παρῆλθον καί χρόνους τῆς ζωῆς μου μετεωριζόμενος ὁ ἄθλιος καί γελῶν! Ὤ πῶς ἐματαιώθην ἀκούων μέχρι τοῦ νῦν τάς θείας Γραφάς καί μή καθόλου γνούς τό ἐκ τούτων ὠφέλιμον! Τί με ὠφέλησεν ἡ παροῦσα ζωή; Ἰδού παρῆλθον ἔτη τῆς ζωῆς μου τόσα καί τόσα. Τίς οὖν οἶδεν, εἰ ζήσομαι ἕως τῆς αὔριον; Ἔφαγον ἐπί ἔτη πολλά, ἐνέπλησά μου τήν γαστέρα κρεῶν, οἴνου καί ἀδηφαγίας πολλῆς. Ἐκαλλωπίσθην ἱματίοις, ἔπαιξά τε ὁμοῦ καί ἐγέλασα κατ᾿ ἐμοῦ, ἐπερισσεύθην ἐν νομίσμασι τόσοις ἤ τόσοις καί ἐξοδιάσας αὐτά ἐπί ματαίοις ἀνάλωσα, μετά ταῦτα πάλιν ἐκτησάμην ἕτερα. Λοετροῖς ἐχρησάμην εἰς κόρον καί μύροις, ἵππους καί ἡμιόνους ἐπιβέβηκα, τραπεζῶν πολλῶν καί πολυτελῶν ἀπήλαυσα, τῷ πλησίον ἐφθόνησα, ἐλοιδόρησα, πεπόρνευκα, ἔκλεψα, ἐψευσάμην. Συνήθεσι καί φίλοις συνανεστράφην περιδόξοις καί πλουσίοις καί ἄρχουσι συνηυλίσθην. Ὄνομα ἐν τῷ βίῳ περιφανές ἐκτησάμην, ἐπί ἁπαλῶν στρωμνῶν ἀνεκλίθην, ἀνέπαυσα τό σῶμα τοῦτο τό γήϊνον, ὕπνον εἰς κόρον ὕπνωσα.
