to mention them by name would therefore be a long task, if not an impossible one. 8.13.1 Of the ecclesiastical rulers who bore witness in the famous cities, let Anthimus, bishop of the city of Nicomedia, who was beheaded, be proclaimed for us first on the tablets of the pious as a martyr of the kingdom of Christ. 8.13.2 And of the martyrs in Antioch, Lucian, a presbyter of the parish there and most excellent in his entire life, who, in Nicomedia, with the emperor himself present, proclaimed the heavenly kingdom of Christ, first by word in his defense, and then also by his deeds. 8.13.3 And of the martyrs in Phoenicia, most distinguished would be those shepherds of the rational flock of Christ, in all things beloved of God: Tyrannion, bishop of the church in Tyre, and Zenobius, a presbyter of the church in Sidon, and also Silvanus, bishop of the churches about Emesa. 8.13.4 But this one, having become food for wild beasts with others in Emesa itself, was taken up into the choirs of martyrs; while the two at Antioch both glorified the word of God through their endurance unto death, the one, the bishop, being delivered to the depths of the sea, and the other, Zenobius, a most excellent physician, steadfastly dying under the tortures applied to his sides. 8.13.5 And of the martyrs in Palestine, Silvanus, bishop of the churches about Gaza, is beheaded at the copper mines in Phaeno, along with thirty-nine others; and there also the Egyptian bishops Peleus and Nilus, with others, endured death by fire. 8.13.6 And among these let the great glory of the parish of Caesarea also be mentioned by us, the presbyter Pamphilus, most wonderful among those of our time, the virtue of whose noble deeds we shall record at the proper time. 8.13.7 Of those who were illustriously perfected in Alexandria and throughout all Egypt and the Thebaid, let there first be recorded Peter, bishop of Alexandria itself, a truly divine example among the teachers of piety in Christ, and with him the presbyters Faustus and Dius and Ammonius, perfect martyrs of Christ, and Phileas and Hesychius and Pachymius and Theodore, bishops of the churches throughout Egypt, and besides these, countless other illustrious men who are remembered by the parishes in each region and place. But to commit to writing the contests of those who struggled throughout the whole world for piety toward the divine, and to relate with accuracy every detail of what happened to them, is not our task, but would be the special work of those who witnessed the events with their own eyes. But those events at which I myself was present, I will make known to posterity in another work. 8.13.8 But in the present account I will append to what has been said the recantation of those who acted against us, and the events that happened from the beginning of the persecution, as they will be most useful to those who read them. 8.13.9 What words could suffice to describe how great was the abundance of goods and prosperity the Roman government enjoyed in the times before the war against us, when the attitude of the rulers was friendly and peaceful toward us? At that time, even those who held the highest power in the whole empire, having completed terms of ten and twenty years, passed their days in festivals and public assemblies, with the most cheerful feasts and gladness, and in all stable peace. 8.13.10 And so, as their power was increasing unhindered and advancing to greatness day by day, they suddenly changed their peaceful attitude toward us and stirred up a war without truce. But the second year of this movement was not yet completed when a revolution occurred concerning the entire government and overturned everything. 8.13.11 For an unfortunate disease fell upon the first of the aforementioned rulers, by which his mind was already being led into derangement, and along with the one honored with the second place after him, he retired to a common and private life. And these things had hardly been done, when the entire government was divided in two, a thing not recorded in memory as ever having happened before.
