For thus had he formerly done even with two prefects, both Hypertimos and Chalkeopoulos, rendering them without symbols, saying that it was fitting for one who was near the emperor and of his blood to be adorned with such insignia. And sending to the forces around his son and emperor, he orders, since he was sending those men away in this manner, that they should be gathered and encamp somewhere around Apros, and if the Catalans with the Almogavars should march out anywhere, to try to check them with war. And the emperor was doing these things, not at all releasing his son-in-law from his affection and severing him from his care, but in every way feigning regard for him, now that he was being proclaimed Caesar, since his wife also, having at the same time received the Caesarian insignia, had been invested. And 518 he did these things trying to separate him from the multitude, since he himself was also sending such messages to the emperor.
21. But the patriarch Athanasios, being for the most part supported by the emperor, did not himself, as it seemed, relax his deference towards him, and all the more because it happened that many of those able to be with the emperor and cooperate for the good were making him desolate, some having voluntarily fled to other cities, and others themselves casting accusations on those on whose account they were also alienated from the emperor. And for these reasons, making use of the opportunity, he was occupied with continuous vigils and litanies, calling together a throng of monks and priests and another multitude, and suffering much in appearance, with all-day synods, alone of the hierarchs, alone of the leaders of the church, sending some away as if to their appointed sees, and holding others in contempt, trying to resolve the disputes of the multitude, even though the body of the church was otherwise in a bad state, with the prominent men living in want and dishonor. For 519 the man's character had not changed from its original state, not even a little, although the emperor had assured him, when he appointed him again over ecclesiastical affairs, that his character had changed. But he was altogether unflattering and unyielding, and, so to speak, as unsoftened as horn-hard beans, severe to monks, altering even the typika of the monasteries and strictly enforcing eating only once a day throughout the year, so that they always ate at the ninth hour, even if a Lord's feast or one of the Paschal season was at hand, severe also to clerics, and severe to the laity, and bringing and carrying all things into divine justifications, which not even those admittedly precise in divine matters had ever employed. And he went on, strengthened in these things by the emperor's support, even if everyone, and especially the notable ones, were displeased with the things being done by him. For his manners were extraordinary compared to those of others and did not at all accord with theirs, appearing to some to be from a supposedly virtuous opinion, to others from an innate disposition, and to others from a passionate state of mind according to the opinion of the ancients. But from where this 520 was, it is possible to be of the persuasive reasoning. Assuredly, then, not only to those who were schismatics from the beginning but also to the others he seemed harsh and of an unbending character and altogether disagreeable. But the emperor, supporting not so much him as his own opinion, as it seemed, on which grounds he had also judged him at the beginning, did not for a moment relax his great concern for him. And when certain libels that were circulated had reached even his own hands, saying certain terrible and dissonant things, he also found no small conspiracy contrived against the patriarch from a cause such as this. The city had, among many others, also Armenian residents. One of them had previously run to the catholic church and been anointed with the holy myrrh. For which reason he was unloved by his fellow countrymen, but especially by his sister. And as they were bitter and reviled the one who had converted because of his change of faith, his sister was also embittered against him, and an enmity arose between them.
