to have become or to be a bishop, nor those ordained by him to be clerics; and they voted that the things done upon him or by him were invalid. For those who had then come together from 7..5 Egypt, having stolen the ordination, appointed this man—an Alexandrian by birth, a Cynic philosopher by profession, but zealous for the doctrine of the synod in Nicaea—bishop of Constantinople. And these things were thus decided by this synod; and the emperor ratified them, and enacted a law that the faith of those who had convened in Nicaea should be authoritative, and that the churches everywhere should be handed over to those who confess one and the same 7..6 Godhead in three hypostases of equal honor and equal power, of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit; and that these were those in communion with Nectarius in Constantinople, and in Egypt with Timothy the bishop of Alexandria, and in the churches throughout the East with Diodorus of Tarsus and Pelagius the bishop of Laodicea in Syria, and among the Asiatics with Amphilochius the president of the church in Iconium, and in the cities around Pontus from Bithynia to Armenia with Helladius the bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia and Gregory of Nyssa and Otreius of Melitene, and in the cities around Thrace and Scythia with Terentius 7..7 of Tomi and Martyrius of Marcianopolis. For the emperor himself, having seen and met them, praised these men, and a good report prevailed concerning them as leading the churches piously. But when these things had happened and the synod came to an end, the others each returned home. 7.10.1 But Nectarius was learning the priestly order under the teacher Cyriacus, the bishop of Adana; for he had asked Diodorus the bishop of Tarsus that this man might be with him for some time. And he also urged many other Cilicians to be with him, and Martyrius, whom, having as a suitable physician and confidant of the sins he committed in his youth, he planned to ordain as a dea7.10.2 con. Martyrius, however, did not consent, claiming to be unworthy of the divine ministry and making Nectarius himself a witness of his life. And Nectarius said, 'Am I not, now a priest, I who lived my former life much more carelessly than you, as you yourself bear witness, having often ministered 7.10.3 to my many licentious acts?' But he, taking him up, said, 'But you, O blessed one, having been recently baptized, have been cleansed and on this account have been deemed worthy of the priesthood, for the divine has legislated both as purifications for sins; and it seems to me, you are no different from newborn babes; but I, having long ago partaken of divine baptism, have continued using the same way of life.' And so, saying such things, he did not undergo the ordination. And I praise the man for his refusal and for this reason I have made him a part of this writing. 7.10.4 But the emperor, having learned what had happened to Paul, the former bishop of Constantinople, transferred his body and buried it in the church which Macedonius, who had plotted against him, had built; and even to this day this temple, being very great and most distinguished, is named after him. This also makes many who are ignorant of the truth to suppose that Paul the apostle lies 7.10.5 here, especially the women and most of the populace. And around this same time the remains of Meletius were also conveyed to Antioch and buried beside the tomb of Babylas the martyr. And it is said that, by order of the emperor, it was received into the cities within the walls along the entire main road, contrary to the custom of the Romans, and was conveyed as far as Antioch, honored in turn with psalms at each place. 7.11.1 And Meletius, indeed, was deemed worthy of such a burial. But Flavian was ordained in his place contrary to the oaths that had been given; for Paulinus was still alive. From this, a very great disturbance again seized the church of the Antiochenes, and a great many separated themselves from communion with Flavian and 7.11.2 gathered for worship separately under Paulinus. And on this account they were at variance with one another
