Theodotion, "from the voice of the multitude," that is, of the crowd, peoples withdrew. It signifies the capture by many enemies, and the fall of the city. Instead of, "from fear of you," Symmachus has said, "from your being lifted up they were scattered." For they were removed from their own land. Some have said "ecstasy" is the consternation from dread. But salvation comes to the saints in a time of tribulation, according to the saying: "When I am weak, then I am strong." And: "My grace is sufficient for you. For my power is made perfect in weakness." But the things that will happen to the disobedient, both Moses and the prophets proclaim. And the Savior says: "When you see Jerusalem 2292 surrounded by armies, then you will say to the mountains, 'Cover us;' and to the hills, 'Fall on us.'" Then, as if to those scattered among the nations, he says, the person of God having been introduced, as some say: But now your spoils will be gathered; that is, you will not be captured for long; and indicating the vulnerability of the Jewish people, as if playing, he says they will take you like locusts, so also their souls have become a plaything for Satan; at which the righteous cry out again. That is, the prophet, passing over to the order of the Church, glorifies God for them, the one who dwells on high, either in the heavens, or in those who have exalted their minds, who are also called Sion, being the Church of God. And it is clear from its being said to be full of judgment and righteousness, in harmony with what he said, "And judgment and righteousness will rest in the desert." For what he called a desert, he now names Sion. For she received Christ the righteousness, whom the earthly Jerusalem did not receive. But judgment indicates that nothing is done by the saints without judgment. Therefore he says, they will be delivered up in law. For they were delivered to the new law of the gospel; and the salvation of these is in treasures laid up in heaven. But instead of, "they will be delivered up in law," Symmachus says: The faith of your time is a wealth of salvation, wisdom, and knowledge. The fear of the Lord is itself your treasure. The Seventy say: Wisdom and knowledge and piety have come. These things are brought up to God like a certain rational sacrifice from men, which are also treasures of righteousness. But as for, "they will be delivered up in law," some say thus: they marvel at those from Israel as having perished through the law, which it received for salvation. For according to the divine Apostle, "Being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes." For it was necessary for the shadow, which was until the time of reformation, to become inactive when Christ the light shone forth. Therefore, shadow-fighting over the law, they were delivered to their enemies. But for us from the nations, the law through Moses has also been found a treasure of salvation. For in it is wisdom and knowledge and piety towards the Lord; for it contains the mystery of Christ as in a type. "For he," he says, "wrote about me." After which he says to the apostles, that your fear will fall upon the unbelievers; and those who formerly feared you, being defeated, will cry out. But instead of, "Behold, in your fear they themselves will be afraid," Symmachus says: Behold, I will be seen by them. They cried out earnestly. And he adds who it was that cried out: angels of peace wept bitterly. But Aquila says, "Behold, I will be seen by them. I will cry out earnestly." And the rest is similar; but Theodotion, "Behold, 2293 I will be seen by them, they cried out earnestly." Angels of peace will weep bitterly. All, therefore, indicate that God will be seen by those who have treasured up for themselves the treasures of righteousness and wisdom. And they were the disciples of the Savior, to whom I was seen. And they cried out earnestly, being angels of peace. Who also cried out bitterly in prayers for the destruction of the former people. And the Savior also wept for Jerusalem. "If you, even you, had known the things that make for your peace." Therefore he says, The ways will be desolated by these. But the phrase, "the fear of the nations has ceased," is obelized as not belonging. And he says that the ways of the people of the circumcision have ceased, and that the covenant given through Moses has been taken away,

Τὸ δὲ, ἐν νόμῳ παραδοθήσονται, τινὲς οὕτω φασίν· θαυμάζουσι τοὺς ἐξ Ἰσραὴλ ὡς ἀπολωλότας διὰ τοῦ νόμου, ὃν εἰς σωτηρίαν ἐδέξατο. Κατὰ γὰρ τὸν θεῖον Ἀπόστολον, "Ἀθετοῦντες τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην, καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν ζητοῦντες στῆσαι, τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐχ ὑπετάγησαν. Τέλος γὰρ νόμου Χριστὸς εἰς δικαιοσύνην παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι." Ἔδει γὰρ τὴν σκιὰν τὴν μέχρι καιροῦ διορθώσεως ἀργῆσαι Χριστοῦ τοῦ φωτὸς ἐπιλάμψαντος. Σκιομαχοῦντες τοίνυν περὶ τὸν νόμον τοῖς ἐχθροῖς παρεδόθησαν. Ἡμῖν δὲ τοῖς ἐξ ἐθνῶν καὶ ὁ διὰ Μωσέως νόμος σωτηρίας εὕρηται θησαυρός. Ἐν αὐτῷ γὰρ σοφία καὶ ἐπιστήμη καὶ εὐσέβεια πρὸς τὸν Κύριον· τὸ Χριστοῦ γὰρ ὡς ἐν τύπῳ περιέχει μυστήριον. "Περὶ ἐμοῦ γὰρ, φησὶν, ἐκεῖνος ἔγραψεν." Μεθ' ἅ φησι πρὸς τοὺς ἀποστόλους, ὡς ὁ φόβος ὑμῶν ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀπίστους πεσεῖται· καὶ οἱ πάλαι φοβοῦντες ὑμᾶς, ἡττημένοι βοήσονται. Ἀντὶ δὲ τοῦ, Ἰδοὺ ἐν τῷ φόβῳ ὑμῶν αὐτοὶ φοβηθήσονται, Σύμμαχος μέν φησιν· Ἰδοὺ ὀφθήσομαι αὐτοῖς. Ἔκραξαν ἐκτενῶς. Ἐπιφέρει δὲ τίνες οἱ κράξαντες· ἄγγελοι εἰρήνης πικρῶς ἔκλαυσαν. Ὁ δὲ Ἀκύλας, Ἰδοὺ, φησὶν, ὁραθήσομαι αὐτοῖς. Βοήσω ἐκτενῶς. Καὶ τὸ λοιπὸν ὁμοίως· ὁ δὲ Θεοδοτίων, Ἰδοὺ 2293 ὀφθήσομαι αὐτοῖς, ἐβόησαν ἐκτενῶς. Ἄγγελοι εἰρήνης πικρῶς κλαύσονται. Πάντες οὖν δηλοῦσι τὸν Θεὸν ὀφθήσεσθαι τοῖς θησαυρίσασιν ἑαυτοῖς δικαιοσύνης καὶ τῆς σοφίας, τοὺς θησαυρούς. Ἦσαν δὲ τοῦ Σωτῆρος οἱ μαθηταὶ, οἷς ἐγὼ μὲν ὤφθην. Οἱ δὲ ἐκέκραξαν ἐκτενῶς ἄγγελοι ὄντες εἰρήνης. Οἳ καὶ πικρῶς ἐβόων ἐν εὐχαῖς ὑπὲρ τῆς ἀπωλείας τοῦ προτέρου λαοῦ. Καὶ ὁ Σωτὴρ δὲ τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἀπεκλαίετο. "Εἰ ᾔδεις καί γε σὺ τὰ πρὸς εἰρήνην σου." ∆ιό φησιν, Ἐρημωθήσονται παρὰ τούτων ὁδοί. Τὸ δὲ, πέπαυται ὁ φόβος τῶν ἐθνῶν, ὀβελίζεται ὡς μὴ κείμενον. Πεπαῦσθαι δέ φησι τοῦ ἐκ περιτομῆς λαοῦ τὰς ὁδοὺς, καὶ τὴν διαθήκην ἦρθαι τὴν διὰ Μωσέως δοθεῖσαν,
