the Holy Spirit, we shall always have this within us, as the Master himself clearly proclaims, and so we shall live as angels upon the earth, or rather as holy sons of God and in all things imitators of their own Father and God; may it be that we all enjoy the sweetest vision of him now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Concerning blasphemy. And that he who says that no one in the present generation can come to be in participation of the Holy Spirit, but also he who slanders the energies of the Spirit and attributes them to the adversary, a new heresy into the of
God's church, renews.
Discourse 32. (406) Brothers and fathers, "every sin," says the most holy oracle of the Savior,
"will be forgiven men, but for him who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit it will not be forgiven, neither in this age, nor in the age to come." Let us inquire, therefore, what is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is to attribute its energies to the contrary spirit, as Basil the Great says. And how does one do this? Whenever one sees either miracles performed by the Holy Spirit or another divine gift in one of his brothers, I mean, compunction or tears or humility or divine knowledge or a word of wisdom from above or anything else granted by the divine Spirit to those who love God, (407) he says this is from the deceit of the devil; but also he who says that those led by the divine Spirit as sons of God, those who do the commandments of their Father and God, are deceived by demons, he too blasphemes against the Holy Spirit who works in them, just as the Jews once did against the Son of God; for they saw demons being cast out by Christ and blasphemed against the Holy Spirit and the shameless ones shamelessly said: “By Beelzebul, the prince of demons, he casts out demons.” But some, hearing these things, do not hear, and seeing, do not see, and all the works attested by the divine Scripture to come from the Holy Spirit and divine energy, as if having gone out of their minds and having spat out all divine Scripture from their souls and having pushed out from their minds the knowledge that comes from it, they do not shudder to say that these things come from drunkenness and demonic activity.
For just like unbelievers and those completely uninitiated in the divine mysteries, if they hear about divine illumination, or about enlightenment of soul and mind, or about contemplation and dispassion, or about humility and tears poured forth from the energy and grace of the Holy Spirit, immediately, as if not bearing the surpassing radiance and power of the words, the eyes of their heart being darkened rather than enlightened, they boldly declare these things to be from the deceit of demons and they shudder neither at the (408) judgment of God, nor at the harm to those who hear them, but the audacious ones shamelessly protest to all that nothing of the sort now happens from God in any of the faithful, which is impiety rather than heresy. For heresy is to deviate in some point from the dogmas set down for us concerning our right faith; but to say that there are not now any who love God, nor are they deemed worthy of the Holy Spirit and, being baptized by it, sons
