leading those who follow, and not out of authority, but out of virtue and goodness may you demand submissiveness and obedience. Do not separate from one another, changing many leaders and being useful nowhere. Paul did not choose to take Mark the evangelist along with him, as it is written, because he did not come with them, but had turned back home previously. How much more are we debtors to love? In whatever state each was called, brothers, in that let him remain. Let us cleanse ourselves, beloved, from every defilement of flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God. Hold fast the traditions which you were taught, instruct one another, always be mindful of death. Pray therefore, I beseech you, for all, bless those who persecute you, bless and do not curse, wandering from place to place, being in want, afflicted, mistreated, wandering in deserts and mountains, or perhaps even entering into the caves of the earth. Boast that it is for Christ's sake, that the world is not worthy of you. Endure, my little children, little children, endure a little while, and the Lord will come, the bestower of crowns, the rewarder, of whom we have been promised to become co-heirs (if indeed we suffer with him, that we may also be glorified with him), praying for all things and for wretched me, that my heart may be strengthened in the Lord to endure until death the things brought upon us, that Christ may not reject me on account of my unworthiness, that I may be delivered from the evil one always in every way. Now I live, beloved, if you stand fast in the Lord. For what is our hope or joy or crown of boasting if not you, both in the present age and in the one to come? Yes, for you are both the comfort of love and my consolation. Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless. Faithful is our God, who will also do it, brothers, to greet one another with a holy kiss. The greeting of me, the humble Theodore, to all my members from the lips of my heart. The brothers with me greet you. Grace be with your spirit. Amen. 222 {1To Joseph, brother and archbishop}1 For me to write to your Holiness is always desirable, and all the more so, the longer the interval of confinement; for it brings me near to your revered person and creates ease through this address, as also now, when I am grieving over the betrayal of the truth by certain abbots. For your Sanctity should know that the former guard, I mean Joseph the adulterer, the one from Photeinoudion, the one from Herakleia, the one from Medikion, the Mylian, the one from Hypolychnion, the Goulaiates (but alas for my sin, that also the Phlouboutene, captured out of foolish simplicity) having stood firm together for a short time, then spurred on by a pretext of *oikonomia* by the one accustomed to work such things, Joseph, have turned aside after Satan, having communed once and twice with the impious; in which, having been leniently released, they ensnare the unstable in their own fall. But, as it seems, the bishop of Nicaea also lies as a cause of stumbling for the bishops; for they are recalling those in exile to do the same things, and, if the supporting hand of God does not intervene, we who are left will also perish. What then is the case? That again, as it seems, the drama revolves around us the humble, along with a few others. Arise therefore, O man of God, as a high priest of Christ the true chief shepherd, and all the more so as you are superior to all by the chief rank of the high priesthood, except for the one who lies in a corner. Glorify God then in your body and in your spirit; you will not be completely abandoned on the island; perhaps you must be tried as of old, so that you might be named a more brilliant victor here too. Yes, yes, brother, for what times we have been preserved. But thanks nevertheless to the one who preserved us; and this is from God, says the apostle, that it was granted to us on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him. The Lord did not overlook our humiliation in the past, nor now, I am confident,
