Lest I waste time, and having sailed through this difficult and hard-to-navigate surge of the sea, I will arm my vessel for other sea voyages, carefully holding fast to the promontories in the power of God and the prayers of saints, so that sailing past we may observe the swell of the wild waves and the forms of the venomous beasts in the seas, and that we might pass unharmed by the venom of the moray eel and stingray and weever and shark and scorpionfish, and might be able, through prayer and supplication, to reach the fair-weathered harbor of truth, the saying being fulfilled in us also, "Those who go down to the sea will declare the mighty acts of the Lord." Therefore I will make my journey to another narration, following this one.
Against the Cainites, 18, but of the sequence, 38. 1. Certain people are called Cainites, having taken the name of the heresy from Cain. For these praise Cain and establish him as their father, and they themselves, so to speak, as if stirred up from a different surge of waves, are not outside the same swell and surge, and as if having sprouted from thorny matter, are not outside the whole heap of thorns, even if they are different in name. For there are many kinds of thorns, yet in all of them exists the evil of piercing injustice. These say that Cain is from the stronger power and 2.63 the authority from above, and also Esau and those with Korah and the Sodomites, but that Abel is from the weaker power; * and all these are praiseworthy among them and of their own kinship. For they pride themselves on being related to Cain and the Sodomites and Esau and Korah. And these, they say, are of the perfect knowledge from above. For this reason they say that the maker of this world, though he busied himself with their destruction, was able to harm them in no way. For they were hidden from him and were changed into the upper aeon, from which the strong power is. For Sophia took them to herself, as they were her own. And for this reason, they say that Judas had accurately recognized these things. For they wish him also to be their kinsman and they number him among those with an excess of knowledge, so that they also circulate a little composition in his name, which they call the Gospel of Judas. And certain other writings are likewise fabricated against Hystera, which Hystera they call the maker of this whole vessel 2.64 of heaven and earth, and they say that some cannot otherwise be saved unless they pass through all things, as Carpocrates also says. 2. For each of them, forsooth, for this pretext, performing unspeakable things and accomplishing shameful acts and committing all sins that exist, invokes the name of each angel, both of the existing angels and of those fictitiously named among them; and to each of these he attaches some unlawful work of the sins on earth, referring his own action to the name of whichever angel he wishes. And when they do these things, they speak thus: "Such-and-such an angel, I make use of your work; such-and-such a power, I perform your action." And this is called perfect knowledge among them, since they have their pretexts for rushing fearlessly into unlawful shameful deeds, forsooth, from the aforementioned mother and father heresies, I mean of the Gnostics and Nicolas and with them Valentinus and Carpocrates. And a book has already come to us in which they have fabricated certain words full of lawlessness, containing the following: "that," it says, "this is the angel who blinded Moses, and these are the angels who those with Korah and
