rivers were brought down. And rivers concerning which the Savior [said], ‘He who believes in me, as the scripture has said, out of his spiritual belly (that of the inner man) shall flow rivers of living water’; but he said this, says the author, concerning the Spirit which those who believed were about to receive. For the water of these rivers is brought out of a rock, concerning which Paul says, They drank from the spiritual rock that followed them; and the rock was Christ. Christ himself, therefore, inasmuch as he is a rock, said concerning the water of the rivers, For he will take of what is mine and declare all things to you. And they added yet to sinning against him, not of all who sin sinning against God, but only of those who have known his will and do not do it. Indeed, David, not being ignorant of God's will, said, Against you only have I sinned. Or perhaps the sin of those who sin in moral matters is against men, but of those who speak evil of God and his providence, the sin, being a certain impiety, goes back to God. For if a man sins against another man, he will also pray for him; but if he sins against the Lord God, who will pray for him? Indeed, therefore, it is added that they provoked the most High in a waterless place, being deprived of the spiritual waters; for they turned away from the water from the aforementioned rock. And being in a waterless place, they did nothing to sweeten the goodness of God. But it is sweetened by things done and contemplated according to virtue and wisdom. Therefore, they tested him in their hearts, not superficially but from the depth of their own ruling faculty, thinking against God and doubting his power to ask for food for their souls, not for those made in the image and likeness of God (for these are fed with the bread of life and the fruit of the tree of life), but for those changing into flesh because they are affected by material things, desiring not beneficial and healthy foods but pleasant and disease-causing ones. Or perhaps the soul desiring food is the appetitive and desiring irrational power in us. For concerning this it is said, And you shall eat meat as much as your soul desires. The irrational animals also partake of this, being desiring and appetitive of food. And they spoke against God and said, Will God be able to prepare a table in the wilderness, and so on? But he has also given bread that has come down from heaven and has prepared a table before his people. Wisdom said, She has set her sacrifices and has prepared her wine, mixing it in a bowl; and none of the unbelievers will taste of them. To this you will take, For I say to you, none of those men shall taste of my supper. Therefore the Lord heard and deferred, even from still paying attention to them. And this followed, that the fire of desires was kindled upon Jacob; or that which is determined for practicing and laboring for virtue, or a fire was kindled from God, able to burn up for their benefit their material choice and disposition. And consequently to this fire, wrath went up against Israel. For from the inferior things which they did, the wrath, being kindled, has gone up against Israel. And perhaps wrath comes down upon those alien to piety who lie somewhere below, according to what is said, For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men. But wrath goes up against those who have been called to do what God wills, who have become above by being called. Indeed, therefore, it is said that wrath has gone up against Israel, who ought to look upward. Consider if those who minister to the punishments from God, being vessels of wrath, are called wrath homonymously with that which they serve. And so the wrath thus spoken of, being lower than the aforementioned Israel, goes up against him. With these things agrees, If the spirit of the ruler rise up against you, do not leave your place. For in these things too, the unclean spirit is said to be below him against whom it goes up. Therefore it was able to go up against Israel. And since they did not believe in God, nor
