I asked a favor as from a friend, and this from my own things, and I promised to give greater things in return; and not even so did you become better. And when men do this, they reckon to their own servants only as much as is the measure of the debt; for example, the servant owes the master one hundred gold pieces, the servant's debtor owes ten gold pieces; if he forgives him the debt, the master does not remit the hundred for him, but only the ten, and demands all the others; But God is not so. But if you forgive your fellow servant a few things, He Himself forgives you all things. From where is this clear? From the prayer itself; For if you forgive, He says, 49.207 men their debts, your heavenly Father will also forgive you your debts. And as great as is the difference between one hundred denarii and ten thousand talents, so great is the difference between their debts and ours. Of what punishment, then, would you not be worthy, you who are about to receive ten thousand talents in exchange for one hundred denarii, and not even so forgiving these small things, but making this prayer against yourself? For when you say, Forgive us, as we also forgive, and then you do not forgive, you ask nothing else of God than to deprive you of all defense and pardon. But I do not dare, he says, to say, Forgive me, as I forgive, but, Forgive me, only. And what of this? For even if you yourself do not say it, God acts so; as you forgive, so He forgives. And this He made very clear from the following words. For if you do not forgive men, He says, neither does your heavenly Father forgive you. Do not then think it to be reverence not to say the whole phrase, nor make the prayer by halves, but pray as He ordained, so that even the necessity of the wording, inspiring fear day by day, may impel you towards the forgiveness of your neighbors. Do not say to me: I have pleaded much, I have supplicated, I have entreated, and he was not reconciled; do not depart before, until you have reconciled him. For He did not say, Leave your gift, and go, supplicate your brother, but, Go, be reconciled; so that even if you supplicate much, do not depart before you persuade him. God exhorts us every day, and we do not listen, and yet He does not cease exhorting; but do you disdain to exhort your fellow servant? And when will you be able to be saved? But you have pleaded many times, and many times you have been rejected; but for this you will receive a greater reward. For the more contentious he is, and you persist in pleading, the more your rewards increase; the more the good deed is accomplished with greater difficulty, and the reconciliation with much labor, so much greater will the judgment be for him, and for you more glorious the crowns of perseverance. Let us not only praise these things, but also demonstrate them through our deeds, and let us not depart before we have returned to our former friendship. For it is not enough not to grieve or wrong the enemy, nor to be ill-disposed towards him in your mind, but you must also prepare him to be well-disposed towards us.
7. For I hear many saying: I do not hate, nor am I grieved, nor have I anything in common with him. But this is not what God commanded, that you should have nothing in common with him, but that you should have many things in common with him. For this reason he is your brother, for this reason He did not say: Forgive your brother what you have against him; but what? Go, first be reconciled to him, even if he has something against you, and do not depart before you have united the member in concord. But you, in order to acquire a useful servant, both pay gold, and speak with many merchants, and often travel on a long journey; but in order to make your enemy a friend, do you not move and do all things, tell me? And how will you be able to entreat God, while so neglecting His laws? And yet the acquisition of a servant will not be able to benefit us greatly, but an enemy who becomes a friend will make God both propitious and 49.208 well-disposed to us, and will easily absolve our sins, and among men will procure for us praise and much security in our life; for nothing is more perilous than even one

Μὴ τοίνυν εὐλάβειαν εἶναι νομίσῃς τὸ μὴ λέγειν ὁλόκληρον τὴν ῥῆσιν, μηδὲ ἐξ ἡμισείας ποιοῦ τὴν εὐχὴν, ἀλλ' ὡς ἔταξεν, οὕτως εὔχου, ἵνα κἂν ἡ ἀνάγκη τῆς λέξεως φοβοῦσα καθ' ἡμέραν συνωθήσῃ σε πρὸς τὴν τῶν πλησίον συγχώρησιν. Μή μοι λέγε· Παρεκάλεσα πολλὰ, ἱκέτευσα, ἐδεήθην, καὶ οὐ κατηλλάγη· πρότερον μὴ ἀποστῇς, ἕως ἂν καταλλάξῃς. Οὐ γὰρ εἶπεν, Ἄφες τὸ δῶρόν σου, καὶ ὕπαγε, ἱκέτευσον τὸν ἀδελφόν σου, ἀλλ', Ὕπαγε, διαλλάγηθι· ὥστε κἂν πολλὰ ἱκετεύσῃς, μὴ πρότερον ἀποστῇς, ἕως ἂν πείσῃς. Ὁ Θεὸς καθ' ἑκάστην ἡμέραν ἡμᾶς παρακαλεῖ, καὶ οὐκ ἀκούομεν, καὶ ὅμως οὐ παύεται παρακαλῶν· σὺ δὲ τὸν σύνδουλόν σου ἀπαξιοῖς παρακαλέσαι; Καὶ πότε δυνήσῃ σωθῆναι; Ἀλλὰ πολλάκις παρεκάλεσας, καὶ πολλάκις ἀπεκρούσθης· ἀλλὰ πλείονα διὰ τοῦτο λήψῃ μισθόν. Ὅσῳ γὰρ ἂν ἐκεῖνος φιλονεικῇ, καὶ σὺ μένῃς παρακαλῶν, τοσούτῳ σοι τὰ τῆς ἀμοιβῆς αὔξεται· ὅσῳ μετὰ πλείονος δυσκολίας τὸ κατόρθωμα γίνεται, καὶ πολλοῦ τοῦ πόνου ἡ καταλλαγὴ, τοσούτῳ κἀκείνῳ μεῖζον ἔσται τὸ κρῖμα, καὶ σοὶ λαμπρότεροι τῆς καρτερίας οἱ στέφανοι. Ταῦτα μὴ μόνον ἐπαινῶμεν, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τῶν ἔργων ἐπιδειξώμεθα, καὶ μὴ πρότερον ἀναχωρήσωμεν, ἕως ἂν εἰς τὴν προτέραν ἐπανέλθωμεν φιλίαν. Οὐ γὰρ ἀρκεῖ τὸ μὴ λυπεῖν μηδὲ ἀδικεῖν τὸν ἐχθρὸν, μηδὲ ἀηδῶς ἔχειν πρὸς αὐτὸν κατὰ διάνοιαν, ἀλλὰ χρὴ κἀκεῖνον παρασκευάζειν ἡδέως πρὸς ἡμᾶς ἔχειν.
ζʹ. Καὶ γὰρ ἀκούω πολλῶν λεγόντων· Ἐγὼ οὐκ ἐχθραίνω, οὐδὲ λυποῦμαι, οὐδὲ ἔχω τι κοινὸν πρὸς αὐτόν. Ἀλλ' οὐ τοῦτο ἐκέλευσεν ὁ Θεὸς, ἵνα μηδὲν κοινὸν ἔχῃς πρὸς αὐτὸν, ἀλλ' ἵνα πρὸς αὐτὸν κοινὰ ἔχῃς πολλά. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο γάρ σού ἐστιν ἀδελφὸς, διὰ τοῦτο οὐκ εἶπεν· Ἄφες τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου, ἃ ἔχεις κατ' αὐτοῦ· ἀλλὰ τί; Ὕπαγε, πρῶτον διαλλάγηθι αὐτῷ, κἂν ἐκεῖνος ἔχῃ τι κατὰ σοῦ, καὶ μὴ πρότερον ἀποστῇς, ἕως ἂν ἑνώσῃς τὸ μέλος εἰς ὁμόνοιαν.
