Ducas. And drawing them with him, he stirs up a great rebellion against Romanos. And having seized a fortress which is named Plateia Petra, he stored in it every kind of provisions; sallying forth from which, he plundered and preyed upon those he happened upon. So the emperor, sending [forces] against him, captured both him and those with him. and having brought him into the city, they both interrogated him and inflicted many blows, to make him name his fellow conspirators, if there were any. But he falsely slandered many of those in authority as being with 422 him. But having been convicted of saying nothing true against them, he was consigned to the flames of the Amastrianum. 34 And the aforementioned son of the emperor, Theophylact, is ordained patriarch, on the second of the month of February, in the sixth indiction, departing in all things from the disposition of his father, but also extending himself to further good deeds along with his inherent learning, when legates came up from Rome and brought a synodical tome speaking about his ordination; who also installed him on the patriarchal throne. 35 The aforementioned granddaughter of Emperor Romanos, Maria, the wife of Peter of Bulgaria, often came into the city from Bulgaria to visit her own father and her grandfather. Finally she came with three children, after her father Christopher had already died. So having received great wealth from her grandfather, she returned with honor. 36 And Emperor Romanos took a wife for his son Stephen, the daughter of Gabalas and granddaughter of Katakylas, named Anna. And along with the bridal crown, the crown of the empire was also placed on her. 37 The first expedition of the Turks against the Romans took place in the seventh indiction, in the month of April; and having raided as far as the city, they plundered all of Thrace. 423 So the patrician Theophanes the protovestiarios and chief minister was sent to make an exchange; who, having dealt with them wonderfully and wisely, accomplished what he wished, being both praised and admired much by them for his prudence and good counsel; at which time Emperor Romanos also displayed his magnanimity and philanthropy, sparing no expense for the ransom of the captives. 38 Emperor Romanos took a wife for his last son, Constantine, from the family of the Armeniacs, named Helene, the daughter of the patrician Adrian; and when she died on the second of the month of February, he joined another wife to him named Theophano, descended from the family of that Mamas. 39 In the fourteenth indiction, on the eleventh of the month of June, the Rus sailed against Constantinople with ten thousand ships, who are also called Dromites, who are of the race of the Franks. So the patrician was sent against them with triremes and dromons, as many as happened to be in the city; and having both equipped and prepared the fleet, and having fortified it as much as possible with fasting and tears, he awaits the Rus, intending to defeat them in a sea battle. And when they reached that place and came near the Pharos (Pharos is the name of a certain structure, on which a beacon is placed for the guidance of travelers at night), this one, 424 lying in wait at the mouth of the Euxine Sea (which is named by antiphrasis; for it was inhospitable because of the continuous raids of the pirates there against visitors, whom, as they say, Heracles destroyed, and the travelers, having obtained safety, named it Euxine [hospitable]) at the place called Hieron, suddenly set upon them, which has received its name because the sailors of the Argo, passing through there, established a temple on that very spot. And indeed, sailing through first with his own dromon, he both broke up the formation of the Rus' ships and burned a great many with the prepared fire, and the rest of them he turned to defeat and flight; following him, the rest of the dromons and the triremes also attacked and brought about a complete rout, and
