you should keep watch, Lord, Lord, who will stand, etc. If the sins according to the mind, making the mind impure, turn it away from the knowledge of God, no one among men will be deemed worthy of knowledge. “For who will boast that he has a pure heart?” Or who will be bold to say he is clean from sins? “And no one,” he says, “is clean from filth, not even if his life were but for one hour.” For with you is propitiation, etc. The propitiation for iniquities with the Lord is Christ; “For he is the propitiation for our sins.” For the sake of your name I have waited for you, Lord, etc. Patience for the sake of the name of God is better than that for any other reason. And the soul, having come to the word of the Lord, patiently endures in a praiseworthy manner. My soul has waited for your word; my soul has hoped in the Lord, etc. Hope is naturally born from testing, and testing from patience, and patience from affliction, and affliction from self-control and temptations. The cause of these is the fear of God, which is joined to right faith. And faith is assent to things not apprehended. And he will redeem Israel from all his iniquities, etc. Then the mind is freed from the sins or iniquities according to the mind, whenever it is deemed worthy of knowledge; for 12.1649 the practice does not remove the thoughts of the heart, but the passionate thoughts. PSALM 130. Lord, my heart was not exalted, nor were my eyes lifted up, etc. These are the voices of a righteous one, who, in great and wondrous gifts, is not puffed up with pride, nor exalted, nor inflated, but even in these things is humble-minded. If I were not humble-minded, but lifted up my soul. As the weaned child upon its mother, so you will recompense my soul, etc. As Isaac and Samuel were weaned, so also this one, having imitated them and those like them. But the soul of one who has been weaned is not exalted by someone exalting it, but is exalted to its own mother, concerning whom it is said: “But the Jerusalem above is free, who is our mother,” and what follows. By the same. To the soul of the weaned one the Lord gives a reward for so great an ascent. Let Israel hope in the Lord from now and until eternity, etc. In the song before this one it was said: “From the morning watch let Israel hope in the Lord;” but in this one, until when? “Because from now and until eternity.” For after that one enjoys the things hoped for. PSALM 131. Remember, Lord, David, and all his meekness, etc. The Lord remembers him in whom he is, and he does not remember him in whom he is not. And if the Lord remembers meekness, there is need for much freedom from anger, so that one may receive the Lord. For meekness is a calmness of anger that comes from the deprivation of corruptible pleasures. By the same. Instead of “meekness,” Aquila rendered “ill-treatment;” Symmachus, “affliction;” and the fifth, “humiliation.” Until I find a place for the Lord, etc. The place of the Lord is a pure mind. We found it in the fields of the forest, etc. He speaks prophetically about wisdom, which is Christ. Like the ointment on the head that runs down upon the beard, the beard of Aaron, etc. The ointment is the Holy Spirit, the head is the mind, the beard is the word; and the word contains the heart. And the beard of Aaron is the word that fences in the passions, and ministers the virtues to God. And the grace of the Spirit descends also upon the border of his garment; that is, it is spread through practical virtue also upon moral philosophy. For the border of the garment is its end. Like the dew of Hermon that descends upon the mountains of Zion, etc. In Deuteronomy Moses calls this mountain Hermon; but the Phoenicians call it Sanior, and the Amorites, Saneir. It is
