I would say the same things of the latter ones, and he is deemed worthy to mourn each day and becomes meek and from his soul he hungers and thirsts for the sun of righteousness and he is rendered merciful and compassionate, so as to make his own the passions and tribulations and infirmities of all, and weeping and being purified he sees God and is reconciled to Him and becomes truly a peacemaker and is counted worthy to be called a son of God Himself. Such a one, therefore, is able, when persecuted and struck and reproached, and reviled and insulted and hearing every evil word spoken against him, to endure with joy and inexpressible exultation, and knowing this, the Lord God has said with a declaration: "Rejoice and be exceedingly glad." But he who has not become such, nor has richly acquired the hypostatic joy within himself, how then will he be able to bear all these things without holding a grudge? In no way!

Therefore, my fathers and brothers, let us never cease with all diligence to examine and investigate ourselves every day and every hour, if it is possible, but let us go through all the commandments, as we have said, and examining and observing ourselves in each one of them, we see. and if we are found to have fulfilled it, let us give thanks to the Lord God and henceforth keep it securely; but if we have not yet remembered it or have not done it, let us run, I beseech you, until we grasp it and become masters of it, lest (405) having despised it, we be called least in the kingdom of heaven. For thus, ascending one by one little by little as on the rungs of a ladder, I know well, we will arrive at the very city of heaven, in which, as we have said above, our Lord stands, looking down and saying to us all: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," and having come there and having seen Him as is possible for a man and having received from Him the kingdom of heaven, which is the Holy Spirit, we shall have it always within us, as the Lord Himself clearly proclaims, and thus we shall live as angels upon the earth, or rather as holy sons of God and in all things imitators of our own Father and God; of Whose most sweet vision may we all be granted to enjoy now and forever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.

Concerning blasphemy. And that he who says that it is not possible for anyone in the present

generation to come into communion with the Holy Spirit, but also he who slanders the energies of the Spirit and ascribes them to the adversary,

introduces a new heresy into the church of God.

Discourse 32. (406) Brothers and fathers, "every sin," says the most holy saying of the Savior,

"will be forgiven men, but he who has blasphemed against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, neither in this age, nor in the age to come." Let us seek, therefore, what is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit. Blasphemy against the Holy Spirit is to ascribe His energies to the contrary spirit, as Basil the Great says. But how does one do this? Whenever someone, seeing either miracles performed by the Holy Spirit or another divine gift in one of his brothers, I mean, compunction or tears or humility or divine knowledge or a word of wisdom from above or anything else graciously given by the divine Spirit to those who love God, (407) says that this is from the deceit of the devil; but also he who those by the divine Spirit
