that rage, those dogs were driven out; but those who love him dwelled in Zion, offering to him the sacrifice of praise.

INTERPRETATION OF PSALM 69. 1. "For the end, for David, for a remembrance, for the Lord to save me." I found this in some 80.1416 copies; but neither in the Hebrew, nor among the other interpreters. It agrees, however, with the meaning of the psalm; for the prophet asks for salvation, and deliverance from his enemies. The blessed David spoke this psalm, when pursued by Absalom; and fittingly, "for a remembrance" is added to the inscription; for the memory of his sin pricked him more fiercely than his enemies; wherefore he cries out: 2. "O God, attend to my help; O Lord, make haste to help me." I am surrounded, he says, by many and various misfortunes; for which reason I ask that speedy help be given to me. 3. "Let them be ashamed and confounded who seek my soul." Let those who long for my slaughter fail, he says, and from this reap shame. "Let them be turned back; and let them be put to shame who wish me evil." [Instead of, not only will they be delivered to the earth, but also with shame they shall depart this life, those who have devised terrible things against those who live piously; for he says this also through the following words.] 4. "Let them be turned back immediately in shame who say to me, 'Aha, aha.'" In addition to these, may those also who rejoice in my evils be turned to flight with shame, seeing my change. 5. "Let all who seek you, O God, exult and be glad in you; and let them who love your salvation say continually, 'Let God be magnified.'" The word "Lord" is not found in the 80.1417 Hexapla. Fill your lovers, he says, with all gladness; so that praising your benefactions they may rejoice. 6. "But I am poor and needy; O God, help me." Instead of, "I am deprived of the aforementioned righteousness, and living in poverty of virtue, I do not have its wealth." "You are my helper and my deliverer." For I have obtained your providence. "O Lord, do not delay." Assist as quickly as possible, and do not put off the request. [For not only David implores this, but also the entire chorus of the saints.]

INTERPRETATION OF PSALM 70. "A psalm for David; of the sons of Jonadab, and of those first taken captive;

without an inscription among the Hebrews." He who made the inscription also confessed that he had not found it in the Hebrew, but that he himself had placed it there. It must be known, however, that the sons of Jonadab were not the first to be taken captive; for the blessed Jeremiah was commanded by God to offer them wine as a reproof of the transgression of the Jews. But when they were unwilling to drink because of the precepts of their ancestors, the prophet then accused the disobedience of the Jews; as the former were keeping human commandments, while the latter were transgressing divine laws. The psalm is spoken from the person of those who migrated to Babylon, who were longing for their return, and desiring deliverance from bondage; and the blessed David wrote it, adapting the words to the order of the more pious. [And especially he foretells to the sons of grace, who are being delivered from the abominable slavery of idols, and believe in Christ our God and receive providence from him.] 1. "In you, O Lord, I have hoped, let me not be put to shame forever." May I not fail, he says, in my hope, awaiting your assistance; nor for a very long time
