On June 28th, in the same indiction, the consecration of the church of the Holy Apostles took place, and the deposition of the precious relics of Andrew, Luke, and Timothy in Constantinople; and the bishop Menas passed by with the same holy relics, seated in a royal chariot. At that time Narses the cubi 485 cularius was also sent to Rome to make war on the Goths, because after Belisarius had taken Rome it was again taken by the Goths. On the month of June 26th, in the same indiction, the bishop of Rome, Vigilius, was received by the emperor; for he had been angered and had taken refuge in the church of Saint Sergius, in the district of Hormisdas. In the 14th indiction a great and terrible earthquake occurred in all the land of Palestine, in both Arabia and in the land of Mesopotamia and Antioch and coastal Phoenicia and Libanensis. and in this terror the cities suffered, that is Tyre, Sidon, Berytus, Tripolis, Byblos, Botrys, and parts of other cities. And multitudes of people were caught in them. In the city of Botrys a part was broken off from the mountain by the sea called Lithoprosopon and was carried down into the sea, and it formed a harbor, so that very large ships could anchor in the harbor of the broken-off mountain; for that city did not formerly have a harbor. The same emperor sent money to all the provinces and rebuilt the public buildings of those cities. and at the time of the earthquake the sea fled into the deep for one mile, and many ships were lost; and again by the command of God the sea was restored to its ancient bed. 486 In the month of September of the 15th indiction, the consecration of St. Irene, which is across the water in Justinianae, took place; and the holy relics came out from the Great Church with the two patriarchs, I mean Menas the patriarch of Constantinople and Apollinarius the pope of Alexandria; and both sat in the royal chariot, holding the precious relics on their knees. And at the same time the harbor near the palace of Secundianae was dredged and cleaned. In the month of August of the 15th indiction Menas the archbishop of Constantinople died; and while the body was lying in the holy sanctuary of the Great Church, Eutychius the apocrisiarius of Amaseia became patriarch. And in the same month news of victory came from Rome from Narses the cubicularius and exarch of the Romans. For having joined battle with Totila, king of the Goths, he won the war decisively and slew him; and his blood-stained garments were sent to Constantinople. In the month of March of the 1st indiction a debasement of the coinage occurred; and a sedition and tumult having arisen among the poor, it was reported to the same emperor; and he ordered the state of the coinage to be maintained according to the ancient custom. In the month of August of the second indiction there was 487 a terrible earthquake, so that many houses and baths and churches and parts of the walls suffered in Byzantium. and in this terror the lance, which the statue in the Forum of Constantine was holding, fell and was driven into the ground for three cubits. and in the collapses many were caught. In this terror other cities also suffered, among which part of Nicomedia also fell. and from the ruins of Nicomedia even after some days some were brought out alive. The same earthquake prevailed for 40 days. In the month of July of the 4th indiction, the Samaritans and the Jews in Caesarea of Palestine rose up in revolt, and having united with one another as in the order of factions they attacked the Christians of that city and slaughtered many of the Christians. They also attacked and plundered the churches. and when the governor of the same city went out against
