next. 6.20.2 And now the present prophecy signifies that the second after the God and Lord of all, he himself, the Word of God, 'will come into Egypt,' and that he will come not obscurely nor invisibly nor without some bodily covering, but riding 'on a light cloud,' or rather 'on a light thickness'; for they say that the Hebrew language has it thus. 6.20.3 Let the children of the Hebrews then say, when after the times of Isaiah the Lord visited the Egyptians, and what Lord; for if it was the God over all, how is he said to be borne upon 'a light thickness' and to arrive locally in a certain part of the earth? 6.20.4 And let them interpret what this 'light thickness' is, and why the Lord is not said to visit Egypt without it. 6.20.5 And when is it recorded that the things spoken in the prophecy came to pass, I mean, the 'shaking' of the 'handmade' idols of 'Egypt,' and the Egyptians warring against Egyptians because of the Lord's coming among men, and that 'their gods,' that is, the demons, who were powerful of old, should no longer have strength, nor answer those who inquire, because of the fear of the Lord? And into the 'hands' of what 'harsh lords,' and of what kings was Egypt delivered after the prophesied coming of the Lord, and why, when the Lord is present, are they delivered over to harsh rulers? And let whoever wishes interpret the rest in a similar way. 6.20.6 For we say that these things are fulfilled in no other way than through the manifestation among men of our Savior Jesus Christ alone; for he, being the Word of God and the power of God, visiting the land of the Egyptians both in spirit and literally by means of a 'light cloud,' fulfilled the things foretold. And he allegorically names as a 'light cloud' his coming through the body which he assumed from a virgin and the Holy Spirit, just as indeed the Hebrew scripture and Aquila more clearly indicated, saying: 'Behold, the Lord rides upon a light thickness, and comes to Egypt,' calling the body from the Holy Spirit a 'light thickness.' 6.20.7 And therefore this part of the prophecy literally came to its fulfillment when an angel of the Lord, appearing in a dream, said to Joseph: 'Arise, take the child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and remain there until I tell you.' 6.20.8 At that time, therefore, the Lord himself, the God Word, arriving at the age of a child, and in his flesh formed from a holy virgin, being 'thick' because of the resistance of bodily matter, but 'light' again because it was superior to ours, and called a 'light cloud' because it was formed not from sensual corruption but from the Holy Spirit, visits the land of the Egyptians. 6.20.9 The reason for his visit there is this. Since it is recorded that the error of idolatry first began in it, and they seemed to be the most superstitious of all men, and to be enemies and foes of the people of God, being as far removed as possible from the prophets, it was fitting that the power of God should come to them first. Wherefore also the word of his evangelical teaching prevailed among the Egyptians more than among all other men; whence the present prophecy foretells that the Lord himself will visit them, 6.20.10 but not that the Egyptians would come into the land of the Jews, nor indeed worship him in Jerusalem, nor become proselytes to the Jews there according to the things commanded by Moses, nor offer sacrifices in the altar near Jerusalem; but he says that none of these things will happen, but that the Lord himself will visit the Egyptians, and will deem the men worthy of his presence, and will be the cause of great blessings for them; 6.20.11 indeed his visit would accomplish these things, which are confirmed as fulfilled by the very deeds after the appearance of our Savior Jesus Christ. τούτοις ἑξῆς. 6.20.2 Καὶ νῦν τὸν δεύτερον μετὰ τὸν τῶν ὅλων θεὸν καὶ κύριον, αὐτὸν δὴ τὸν τοῦ θεοῦ λόγον, «ἥξειν εἰς Αἴγυπτον» ἡ παροῦσα προφητεία σημαίνει, καὶ ἥξειν οὐκ ἀφανῶς οὐδ' ἀοράτως οὐδ' ἄνευ τινὸς σωματικῆς περιβολῆς, ἀλλ' «ἐπὶ νεφέλης κούφης» ὀχούμενον, μᾶλλον δὲ «ἐπὶ πάχους ἐλαφροῦ»· οὕτω γὰρ ἔχειν φασὶν τὴν Ἑβραίων φωνήν. 6.20.3 λεγέτωσαν δῆτα Ἑβραίων παῖδες, πότε μετὰ τοὺς Ἡσαΐου χρόνους ὁ κύριος Αἰγυπτίοις ἐπιδεδήμηκεν, καὶ ποῖος κύριος· εἰ γὰρ ὁ ἐπὶ πάντων θεός, καὶ πῶς ἐπὶ «πάχους ἐλαφροῦ» οὗτος ἐποχεῖσθαι λέγεται καὶ τοπικῶς ἐπιβαίνειν μέρει τινὶ τῆς γῆς; 6.20.4 ἑρμηνευέτωσαν δὲ καὶ τὸ «πάχος ἐλαφρὸν» τί ποτε ἄρα ἐστίν, καὶ διὰ τί μὴ ἄνευ τούτου λέγεται ὁ κύριος ἐπιδημεῖν τῇ Αἰγύπτῳ. 6.20.5 πότε δὲ καὶ ἱστόρηται τὰ ἐν τῇ προφητείᾳ εἰρημένα τέλους τετυχηκέναι, τὸ «σεισθῆναι», λέγω, τὰ εἴδωλα «τὰ χειροποίητα Αἰγύπτου», καὶ τὸ Αἰγυπτίους Αἰγυπτίοις πολεμῆσαι διὰ τὴν τοῦ κυρίου εἰς ἀνθρώπους παρουσίαν, καὶ τὸ «τοὺς θεοὺς αὐτῶν», δηλαδὴ τοὺς δαίμονας, πολλὰ τὸ παλαιὸν δυναμένους, μηκέτι ἰσχύειν, μηδὲ ἀποκρίνασθαι τοῖς ἐπερωτῶσι διὰ τὸ τοῦ κυρίου δέος; «εἰς χεῖρας» δὲ ποίων «κυρίων σκληρῶν», ποίων δὲ βασιλέων μετὰ τὴν θεσπιζομένην τοῦ κυρίου παρουσίαν παρεδόθη Αἴγυπτος, καὶ διὰ τί κυρίου παρόντος σκληροῖς ἄρχουσιν παραδίδονται; καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ δὲ τούτοις παραπλησίως ὁ βουλόμενος ἑρμηνευσάτω. 6.20.6 ἡμεῖς γὰρ οὐκ ἄλλως ταῦτά φαμεν συνίστασθαι ἢ διὰ μόνης τῆς τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ εἰς ἀνθρώπους ἐπιφανείας· οὗτος γάρ, θεοῦ λόγος ὢν καὶ θεοῦ δύναμις, κατὰ διάνοιαν καὶ πρὸς λέξιν ἐπιδημήσας τῇ Αἰγυπτίων χώρᾳ διὰ «νεφέλης κούφης» ἐπλήρου τὰ προηγορευμένα. νεφέλην δὲ κούφην ἀλληγορικῶς ὀνομάζει τὴν δι' οὗ ἀνείληφεν σώματος ἐκ παρθένου καὶ ἁγίου πνεύματος ἐπιδημίαν αὐτοῦ, ὥσπερ οὖν ἡ Ἑβραίων γραφὴ καὶ ὁ Ἀκύλας σαφέστερον ᾐνίξατο εἰπών· «ἰδοὺ κύριος ἐπιβαίνει ἐπὶ πάχους ἐλαφροῦ, καὶ ἔρχεται ἐπ' Αἴγυπτον», πάχος ἐλαφρὸν τὸ ἐξ ἁγίου πνεύματος σῶμα προσαγορεύσας. 6.20.7 καὶ τοῦτο τοιγαροῦν τὸ τῆς προφητείας μέρος πρὸς λέξιν τέλους ἐτύγχανεν, ὅτε ἄγγελος κυρίου ὄναρ ἐπιφανεὶς εἶπεν τῷ Ἰωσήφ· «ἐγερθεὶς παράλαβε τὸ παιδίον καὶ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ, καὶ φεῦγε εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ ἴσθι ἐκεῖ ἕως ἂν εἴπω σοι». 6.20.8 τότε γοῦν αὐτὸς ὁ κύριος ὁ θεὸς λόγος, ἐπιπαριὼν τῇ τοῦ παιδὸς ἡλικίᾳ, καὶ ἐν τῇ συστάσῃ αὐτοῦ ἐξ ἁγίας παρθένου σαρκὶ «παχείᾳ» μὲν οὔσῃ διὰ τὸ τῆς σωματικῆς ὕλης ἀντίτυπον, «ἐλαφρᾷ» δὲ πάλιν διὰ τὸ κρείττονα ἢ καθ' ἡμᾶς εἶναι, καὶ «νεφέλη κούφη» ὀνομαζομένῃ διὰ τὸ μὴ ἐξ ἡδυπαθοῦς φθορᾶς, ἀλλ' ἐξ ἁγίου πνεύματος συστῆναι τῇ τῶν Αἰγυπτίων ἐπιδημεῖ χώρᾳ. 6.20.9 Ἡ δ' αἰτία τῆς ἐκεῖσε ἐπιδημίας αὐτοῦ τοῦτον ἔχει τὸν λόγον. ἐπεὶ γὰρ ἐν αὐτῇ πρώτῃ κατάρξαι τὰ τῆς εἰδωλολάτρου πλάνης μνημονεύεται, ἐδόκουν τε πάντων ἀνθρώπων μάλιστα δεισιδαιμονέστατοι τυγχάνειν ἐχθροί τε εἶναι καὶ πολέμιοι τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, τῶν προφητῶν κατὰ πλεῖστον ὅσον ἀφεστῶτες, εἰκότως αὐτοῖς πρώτοις ἡ τοῦ θεοῦ ἐφίστη δύναμις. διὸ καὶ πάντων ἀνθρώπων μᾶλλον παρ' Αἰγυπτίοις ἴσχυσεν ὁ τῆς εὐαγγελικῆς αὐτοῦ διδασκαλίας λόγος· ὅθεν ἡ παροῦσα προφητεία αὐτὸν αὐτοῖς ἐπιδημήσειν τὸν κύριον θεσπίζει, 6.20.10 ἀλλ' οὐχὶ τοὺς Αἰγυπτίους ἥξειν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίων χώραν οὐδέ γε εἰς τὰ Ἱεροσόλυμα προσκυνήσειν αὐτῷ, οὐδ' ἐνταῦθα κατὰ τὰ παρὰ Μωσεῖ προστεταγμένα προσηλυτεύσειν Ἰουδαίοις, οὐδὲ θύσειν θυσίας ἐν τῷ πρὸς τῇ Ἱερουσαλὴμ θυσιαστηρίῳ· ἀλλὰ τούτων μὲν ἔσεσθαί φησιν οὐδέν, τὸν δὲ κύριον αὐτὸν ἐπιδημήσειν τοῖς Αἰγυπτίοις, καὶ τῆς αὐτοῦ παρουσίας καταξιώσειν τοὺς ἄνδρας, μεγάλων τε ἀγαθῶν καταστήσεσθαι αἴτιον αὐτοῖς· 6.20.11 κατορθώσειν γοῦν αὐτοῦ τὴν ἐπιδημίαν ταῦτα, ἅπερ καὶ αὐτοῖς ἔργοις μετὰ τὴν τοῦ σωτῆρος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐπιφάνειαν συνίσταται πεπληρωμένα. τίνα δὲ ἦν, θεασώμεθα. Οἱ πρὶν τὴν Αἴγυπτον οἰκοῦντες φαῦλοι καὶ μοχθηροὶ δαίμονες, ἐξ αἰῶνος μακροῦ τοῖς ξοάνοις
