to the aid of the Christians the same Samaritans came up, and they slaughtered him in the praetorium, and plundered all his belongings. But the wife of the same governor Stephanos, having gone up to Constantinople, approached the same emperor. And when the emperor heard the things that had been done by the Samaritans and became enraged, he ordered Amantius, who was then governor of the East, to investigate the events and the murder of the same Stephanos. Which Amantius, having received the imperial responses and having gone to Caesarea, and having sought out and found those who had committed the murders, some he impaled, 488 others he beheaded and others he cut off their right hands and some he confis-488-cated their property; and a great fear came upon the city of Caesarea and in the eastern parts. In the month of December, in the same indiction, there was a mortality of men in various cities. In the month of May of the same indiction there was a shortage of bread in Constantinople, and for a little while the people were in distress, and they cried out to the same emperor on his birthday while an ambassador of the Persians was viewing the spectacle with the same emperor; and the same emperor, becoming indignant, gave orders to Musonius, who was prefect of the city, and from the Blue faction were arrested and some of the notable men were punished. And the same shortage of bread lasted for three months. And after a few days there were terrible lightnings and thunders in various cities, so that many were also harmed. In the month of November, of the 5th indiction, a fire appeared in the sky in the form of a spear, stretching from the eastern parts to the west. In the month of April, in the same indiction, there was a terrible and harmless earthquake. In the month of December of the 6th indiction there was another very terrible earthquake at midnight, so that the two walls of Constantinople suffered, both the old one built by Constantine and 489 the one built by Theodosius, and parts of churches collapsed, especially those beyond the Hebdomon; and the column that was in the Secundianae was brought down along with the statue; And of Rhegium very many things collapsed. Many died in the collapses; but some even after days were saved from among those trapped by the collapses. And in this terror, also in the cities outside, many places fell. And the same terrible threat prevailed for ten days; and for a little while the people were moved to compunction, persevering in litanies and prayers in the church. And the same emperor Justinian did not wear his crown for thirty days. And at the same time there entered into Constantinople a strange nation of Huns called the Avars. And in those same days the bishop of Caesarea in Cappadocia died in Byzantium; and Theocritus was made bishop in his place. In the month of February of the 6th indiction a plague occurred in Constantinople from buboes. And in this terror all the districts made silver biers. And the same terrible threat from God prevailed for six months. And at the same time, while the dome of the great church was being restored, for it had cracked in visible places from the tremors 490 that had happened by the loving-kindness of God, while the Isaurians were working, suddenly the eastern part of the pendentive arch fell, and it crushed the ciborium together with the holy table. and the remaining part that was left was also brought down, and the vaults themselves; and the same dome was rebuilt, having been raised by twenty feet. In the month of March of the 7th indiction the Huns and the Sclavenes rose up against Thrace; and having made war, they killed many and took some as plunder; And Sergius, the son of Bacchus, the stratelates, and Ederman, the majordomo of Calopodius, they took as plunder, having captured them. And they found places of the wall of Constantinople that had fallen down, and having entered from there they overran as far as Saint Stratonicus ****** the orthodox faith.
