But to be far from him, he does not mean the substance of God; for He is present everywhere, and is near to all; but His providence, and the working of His help. 13. "Let them be ashamed and fail who slander my soul." But Symmachus thus: Let them be utterly shamed and consumed who are opposed to my soul. May they fail in their own undertakings, and reap the shame from it; and may they vanish, unjustly contriving my 80.1424 destruction. "Let them be clothed with shame and dishonor who seek my hurt." May they become objects of reproach and ridicule who surround me with all sorts of evils. 14. "But I will hope in you continually." For seeing these things happen, I will be confirmed in hope in you. "And I will add to all your praise." And I will offer you a manifold hymn. 15. "My mouth shall declare your righteousness; all the day your salvation." I will not cease recounting this your righteous verdict, and teaching all, how, having judged between me and my enemies, you freed me from their slavery. "For I have not known letters, [16] I will enter into the power of the Lord." But Symmachus thus: For I do not know how to number; I will come in the power of the Lord. Since he promised to recount the righteousness of God, and the salvation that came to him, but the promise is greater than a man can keep, he fittingly added: "For I do not know how to number." This the blessed David also said in the 39th psalm. For having said: "Many things have you done, O Lord my God, your wondrous works, and in your thoughts there is no one who will be likened to you," he added: "I have declared and I have spoken, they are multiplied beyond number." This he also says here: "For I do not know how to number." For my nature has not received such writings and learning; but I will nevertheless enter into the power of the Lord, and as is possible for human nature, I will make the hymn. "O Lord, I will be mindful of your righteousness alone. [17] O my God, you have taught me from my youth." And I hymn you, O Master; both seeing the righteousness shown to me, and being mindful of your commandments. For you taught me these things from childhood. Prophetically David foretells the things that will be; and he calls the end of the law old age. And this happened after the coming of the Lord Christ. But the blessed Paul teaches us more clearly, speaking about the New Covenant. For he says thus: "In that he says, a new covenant, he has made the first old. Now that which is becoming old and growing aged is near to vanishing away. And so here he prophetically teaches those in Babylon to say: "Even to old age and advanced years, O my God, do not forsake me." Then, showing what old age he means, he added: "Until I declare your arm to every generation to come. Your power, [19] and your righteousness, O God." And the generation to come is that after the incarnation of the only-begotten Son of God; after which the Church from the nations was established, receiving from the Jews as preachers the holy apostles. About this generation he also says in the twenty-first psalm: "The generation to come shall be declared to the Lord, and they shall declare his righteousness to a people that shall be born, whom the Lord has made." Therefore, another people besides the people of the Jews, whom the prophet foretold not as having been born, but as one that will be born. Σαφέστερον δὲ ἡμᾶς ὁ μακά ριος διδάσκει Παῦλος, περὶ τῆς Καινῆς διαλεγόμενος ∆ιαθήκης. Φησὶ δὲ οὕτως· "Ἐν τῷ λέγειν καινὴν πεπαλαίωκε τὴν πρώτην· τὸ δὲ παλαιούμενον καὶ γη ράσκον ἐγγὺς ἀφανισμοῦ. Καὶ ἐνταῦθα τοίνυν προ φητικῶς τοὺς ἐν Βαβυλῶνι διδάσκει λέγειν· "Ἕως γήρως καὶ πρεσβείου, ὁ Θεός μου, μὴ ἐγκαταλίπῃς με." Περὶ ταύτης τῆς γενεᾶς καὶ ἐν τῷ εἰκο στῷ καὶ πρώτῳ ψαλμῷ λέγει· "Ἀναγγελήσεται τῷ Κυρίῳ γενεὰ ἡ ἐρχομένη, καὶ ἀναγγελοῦσι τὴν δι καιοσύνην αὐτοῦ λαῷ τῷ τεχθησομένῳ, ὃν ἐποίησεν ὁ Κύριος."
