is also what was written by Habakkuk: "I considered your works and was amazed." The prophet says that the ecstasy thus interpreted came from the Lord, magnified upon those who receive benefits. 5.135 When this happened, "Judah will be drawn up in Jerusalem," about whom it was said: "Judah, let your brothers praise you," Judah, who confesses on behalf of all. And Judah, being transformed, is drawn up confessing in the true Jerusalem, in which "the one who dwells is not shaken forever," so that he may gather from all around the strength of all the peoples, gold and silver and a multitude of garments, which is very great. 5.136 It has often been made clear both in other divinely-inspired scriptures and in the prophet set forth for examination, that the enlightened mind is signified by the meaning of gold, and the intelligent and precise word by the name of silver. Hence it is fitting to apply the garments correspondingly to the gold and silver, a great multitude of which the holy Judah gathered from all around, from all the peoples, that is, from all who have believed from the nations. 5.137 But clothing and garments, according to a divine allegorical interpretation, are the virtues in their various forms and the deeds accomplished according to them, and the dogmas of piety and the mysteries of truth. With these vestments is covered ···· the bride of Christ, being the Church, and a queen, as is sung in the forty-fourth Psalm: "The queen stood at your right hand in clothing of wrought gold, robed in many colors," and in addition: "In golden fringes, robed in many colors." 5.138 For may the mind not be so blinded as to think that the Holy Spirit teaches about physical garments, but about garments that belong to and adorn the inner man, about which it is written commandingly in Ecclesiastes: "Let your garments be white at all times," which God Himself puts on and clothes the soul that says with thanksgiving: "I rejoice in the Lord; for he has clothed me with a garment of salvation and a robe of gladness." 5.139 To her who is thus adorned with the world of garments, the bridegroom who gave them to her says: "I clothed you with fine-spun garments and fine linen," calling those things fine-spun that are woven from the most delicate and subtle thoughts and deeds ··· and fine linen are those things woven from perceptible actions and words, since fine linen grows from the earth, so as to be compared in this way to perceptible things. 5.140 Judah, having gathered to be drawn up in the intelligible Jerusalem which sees peace, the strength of the peoples from all around, gathered the intelligible treasures of the peoples, being gold, silver, a very great multitude of garments, that is, mind and word according to what has been interpreted allegorically and the clothing assigned, gathered into a very great multitude. Since sufficient clarification has been given for the present saying, let us set forth what follows it. 5.141 Zach. XIV, 15: And this will be the fall of the horses and of the mules and of the camels and of the donkeys and of all the cattle that are in those camps, according to this fall. 5.142 Just as the nations that stood badly, having fallen, blessedly 5.142 and praiseworthily rose up, as was just now interpreted, so also the horses, mules, camels, donkeys, according to allegory, having fallen from the state in which they are such, will rise up for their own good in a saving manner. 5.143 For the horses that became mad for females by neighing for their neighbors' wives have fallen from the pleasure-loving passion and adulterous state, so that they may rise up in a praiseworthy resurrection, about which Jesus said to his disciples: "Rise, let us go from here," and to the Church from the nations which became his bride he cries: "Arise, come, my love." Of this understanding is the apostolic word which goes thus: "Awake, you who are sleeping, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine upon you."
