Therefore, when the flood utterly destroyed the whole state of mankind, only Noah was preserved, having found grace with God, having been found righteous in the generation of that time. And he built an ark for himself by the command of God, according to what has already been said by us before, as the true scriptures have it, in which the same book of truth says that he was saved, both himself and the aforementioned seven souls with him, I mean his own wife and his three sons and likewise their three wives. And from this the truth establishes that remnants of the human race came to be again in the world. Whence, as they advanced generation by generation * and in succession son succeeding father, the age passed for five generations. 8. And at that time the foundation of Babylon came to pass in the land of the Assyrians, and the tower built by them then. And there were at this time, as I have already related in the former heresies according to the sequence of the generations treated by me above, all seventy-two men in number, both chiefs and 2.78 heads, of the family of Ham, thirty-two, and of Japheth, fifteen, and of Shem, twenty-five. And thus the tower and Babylon came to be. From this, both tribes and tongues were scattered over all the earth. And since the seventy-two who were then building the tower were scattered by their tongues, being confused and from the one which they knew *, being inspired by the will of God, each one received a different one. From whom even until now the constitution of languages has been established, so that it is possible for one who wishes to find each founder of each language, as Javan received the Greek language, from whom the Ionians are also called, who have the ancient language of the Greeks, and Thiras that of the Thracians, Meshech the language of the Mossynoeci, Tubal that of the Thessalians, Lud that of the Lydians, Gephar that of the Gasphenes, Mizraim that of the Egyptians, Psous that of the Axumites, Armot that of the Arabs, and each of the rest, so that I do not speak of them one by one, was inspired with his own language. And thus the succession of each language has been spread in the world. 9. From where, then, did these men falsify their words, inserting their own myth-making, imagining and dreaming up things that are not as if they are, and scattering things that are from their own mind? But the whole thing is the will of the devil which he implanted in the souls of men. And it is possible to see and marvel how in many absurdities he deceived man and dragged him down into lawlessness, into 2.79 fornications and adulteries and licentiousness, and idol-madness and sorcery and bloodshed, and robberies and greed, and gambling and gluttony and all such things, but nowhere before the coming of Christ did he dare to utter any blasphemous word against his own master or to conceive rebellion. For he was awaiting the coming of Christ, as he says, "concerning you it is written that he will command his angels concerning you and on their hands they will bear you up." For he always heard the prophets proclaiming the coming of Christ, and that there would be redemption for those who have sinned and who repent through Christ, and he thought to obtain some mercy. But when the wretch saw that Christ did not accept his conversion to salvation, opening his mouth against his own master he vomited forth blasphemy, implanting in men the suspicion to deny the one who is and to seek the one who is not. Thus, therefore, these men also will be refuted in every way as having been deceived. For Seth has died and his years have been recorded. For having lived nine hundred and twelve years he paid the debt of nature, having begotten sons and daughters, as the divine scripture says. And in succession his son, and his name was Enos, he too, having lived nine hundred and five years, exchanged the according to
