against Egypt. But Cyrus, the bishop of Alexandria, learning of their advance, became alarmed, and fearing their greed, he made a pact promising that Egypt would provide them with 12 myriads of denarii per year and would send gold for the stipulated obligations. And having provided this for three years, he kept Egypt free from destruction. But Cyrus was accused before the emperor for having given the gold of Egypt to the Saracens; and sending for him with anger, he summoned him, and he sends out a certain Manuel, an Armenian by race, as Augustalis. When the time was fulfilled, the agents of the Saracens arrived to receive the gold. But Manuel drove them away empty-handed, saying, "I am not Cyrus the unarmed, that I should give you tribute, but I am armed." When they had departed, the Saracens immediately armed themselves against Egypt, and joining battle against Manuel, they drove him out, and he himself was saved with a few men into Alexandria. Then the Saracens imposed tribute on Egypt. But Heraclius, hearing what had been done, sends Cyrus to persuade them to withdraw from Egypt according to the first agreement; and Cyrus, having gone to the camp of the Saracens, defended himself as being innocent of the transgression, and asking if they were willing to confirm the former agreement with oaths. to 339 this the Saracens were not persuaded, saying to the bishop: "Can you swallow this enormous pillar?" And he said: "It is not possible." And they said: "Neither is it possible for us to withdraw from Egypt any longer." Years of the world 127. Years of the divine incarnation 627. Bishop of Alexandria, Cyrus, 10 years. 3. In this year. Umar campaigned against Palestine, and after besieging the holy city for a period of two years, he took it by treaty; for Sophronius, the archbishop of Jerusalem, received a promise of security for all of Palestine. And Umar entered the holy city clothed in filthy garments of camel hair, displaying a satanic hypocrisy, and he sought the temple of the Jews, which Solomon had built, to make it a place of worship for his own blasphemy. Seeing him, Sophronius said: "Truly this is the abomination of desolation spoken of by Daniel the prophet standing in the holy place." And with many tears the champion of piety lamented the Christian race. While he was there, the patriarch begged him to accept from him a linen cloth with a garment to wear. But he did not condescend to wear them. With difficulty, therefore, he persuaded him to wear them until his own clothes were washed, and then he returned them to Sophronius and put on his own. During these events Sophronius died, who in word and deed had adorned the church of Jerusalem and had struggled against the wicked doctrine of Heraclius and his fellow Monothelites, Sergius and Pyrrhus. In the same year, Umar sent Iyad into Syria, and he subjected all of Syria to the Saracens. 340 27. 3. 28. 4. In this year John, surnamed Kataias, the governor of Osroene, came to Iyad in Chalcis, and agreed to give him ten myriads of nomismata annually, on condition that he not cross the Euphrates, neither in peace, nor in war, as long as he delivered the amount of gold. On these terms John returned to Edessa, and having procured the annual tribute, sends it to Iyad. But Heraclius, upon hearing this, judged John to be at fault for having done this without the emperor's knowledge, and having summoned him, he condemned him to exile. And in his place he sends a certain Ptolemy, a strategelates. 28. 4. 29. 5. In this year the Arabs took Antioch. And Muawiya was sent by Umar as general and amir of all the land under the Saracens from Egypt to the Euphrates. Years of the world 130. Of the
