Pray, you who are in penitence. Let us all earnestly entreat on behalf of our brothers who are in penitence, that the merciful God may show them the way of repentance, may accept their recantation and confession, and crush Satan under their feet speedily, and may deliver them from the snare of the devil and from the insolence of demons, and may set them free from every unlawful word and every absurd deed and wicked thought. And may He forgive them all their transgressions, both voluntary and involuntary, and blot out the handwriting that is against them, and write them in the book of life, and may He cleanse them from all filthiness of flesh and spirit, and unite them, restoring them to His holy flock. For He knows our frame; for who shall boast that he has a pure heart? Or who shall have boldness to say he is clean from sin? For we are all liable to penalty. Let us still more earnestly pray for them, because there is joy in heaven over one sinner that repents, so that, turning away from every unlawful work, they may be joined to every good deed, that the man-loving God may speedily and favorably accept their prayers, restore them to their former dignity, and grant them the joy of salvation, and establish them with His governing Spirit, that their steps may no longer be shaken, but that they may be counted worthy to become partakers of His holy rites and participants in the divine mysteries, so that, being declared worthy of the adoption, they may attain to eternal life. Let us all still earnestly say for them: Lord, have mercy; save them, O God, and raise them up by Your mercy. Having risen, bow to God through His Christ and be blessed. Let the bishop, therefore, pray something like this: O God Almighty, eternal, Lord of all, Creator and Governor of all things, who through Christ made man the ornament of the world, and gave him a natural and a written law, that he might live according to law as a rational being, and to him when he had sinned gave a pledge of repentance in Your goodness: look upon those who have bowed the neck of their soul and body to You, for You do not desire the death of a sinner, but his repentance, that he should turn from his wicked way and live. You who accepted the repentance of the Ninevites, who wills all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth, who accepted the son who had devoured his living riotously
