we will call upon the name. For from this, salvation will also follow for us; For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.

830 Ps 80 arg Since there are many orders of those being improved by Christ who

are also called his branches, as he is the true vine, there would be various winepresses, that is, promises, into which their fruit, being pressed, makes wine that gladdens the heart of man. And since all God-breathed scripture is called a vineyard (for concerning it, having been taken from the Hebrews and given to those from the nations who believed, it is said to the Jews, ‘The kingdom of heaven will be taken from you’—which he alluded to as a vineyard in the parable—‘and it will be given to a nation producing its fruits’), the fruits and clusters of this vineyard are the bearing of thoughts; which fruits the minds of believers, having received them, like divine winepresses, will press out and make wine, from which he who is able to say to God, ‘You have given gladness to my heart,’ drinks. And fittingly with the inscription, the eightieth psalm is also arranged, with this number containing eight decades so as to bear a symbol of the resurrection of the Lord, which was accomplished on the Lord's day, being the eighth day. But this is not the first inscribed ‘For the winepresses,’ but also the eighth. and it itself, because of the aforementioned meaning, is arranged in the order of the eighth number. 831 Ps 80,2 And since, by his own death, helping us, Jesus destroyed the devil who has the power of death, we shout in triumph, mocking the abolished tyrant, rejoicing in the one who provided the help. 832 Ps 80,3 Since the timbrel is from the hide of a dead animal, he wants us, having mortified our members which are upon the earth and carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, to fashion a timbrel for ourselves, which we will give instead of a psalm. we do not receive him in a passing way; But the word commands not only to render a timbrel for the psalm but also a psaltery and a harp. And as it is said in other psalms, the psaltery, because it is straight and unbent and gives forth its sound from above, is the spirit of man that is in him, with the soul being signified by the harp, since its stretched-out senses and its soul's powers make the sound of its activities melodious and musical. If, therefore, the psaltery signifies the spirit, the harp the soul, and the timbrel the body, we receive the word, being a divine psalm, in order to cause the spirit, the soul, and the body to perform contemplation and actions according to virtue. 833 Ps 80,6-8b But according to the spiritual sense, it is thus: the precept declaring the spiritual will of the shadowy feast has been set as a testimony by the Lord for those from the nations who have been added to the gospel. For it has been said before that the name of Joseph signifies these. For these, having left behind in their mindset the passions and vices and the very place upon the earth, hastened to be outside of the figurative Egypt, and at the same time as they were going out of it, they heard a tongue, that is, a language, which they had not known before. And the symbols of this marvel are borne in the Acts of the Apostles, when tongues as of fire appeared, so that they sat upon each one of the believers, and suddenly each one heard the great deeds of God being spoken in his own language by different voices; But those who obtained this gift removed the back of their soul from burdens, no longer enduring to carry the material and clay-like affairs of the figurative Egypt. For their hands served, but they will not serve, at the basket, their actions, which he called hands, no longer touching chaff and brick but nobly and freely taking up some of the baskets, which Jesus filled from the loaves he broke. For the leftover fragments became fillings of baskets from which
