to Moors, and to the whole inhabited world they gave laws; and they prevailed not only while they were living, but also when they had died; and ten thousand times would those who received the laws choose to give up their life, than to depart from those laws. I will make mention of your name in every generation and generation. Therefore peoples will confess to you forever and for ever and ever. Another says, I will remember your name in each generation. Therefore peoples will praise you continually. Another, For this reason peoples will confess to you. He spoke of the greatness of the rule from the length of the earth, from the breadth of the inhabited world, from the multitude of the nations that were subjected. He speaks also of its dignity from another point, that it will not only be extended everywhere in the inhabited world, but also throughout all time. For your memory, he says, will be immortal, written in our books, written in the states, written in the ordinances. See how he also prophesies the permanence of his own prophecy. For by saying, I will make mention of your name in every generation and generation, he made this clear. Even if I die, he says, yet I will sing to you even in death. For the body will be dissolved; but the writings remain, and the law is lasting. Therefore peoples will confess to you. Where he began, there he ended, in Christ. Therefore. For what reason? Because you accomplished so much, because you established such rulers, because you drove out wickedness, because you planted virtue, because you harmonized our nature, because you worked these ineffable good things; the whole inhabited world will raise a hymn to you, not in a short time, nor in ten, and twenty, and a hundred years, nor in a part of the inhabited world, but land and sea, inhabited and uninhabited, will sing throughout all ages, giving thanks for the good things that have happened. For all these things, then, let us also give thanks to the man-loving Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be the glory, together with the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
ON THE 45TH PSALM.
To the end, for the sons of Kore, concerning the hidden things. Another, To the victory-giver of the sons of Kore. Another, A song for the youth. Our God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in troubles, which have found us. Another, Being found in troubles. Therefore we will not fear when the earth is troubled, and mountains are carried into the heart of the seas. 1. The prophet uses his accustomed philosophy, drawing us away from the affairs of life, and leading the hearer up to the hope from above. For do not speak to me of weapons and walls and trenches, he says, nor of an abundance 55.204 of money, and experience in warfare, and a multitude of horses, nor bows, and arrows, and breastplates, nor multitudes of allies, and phalanxes of soldiers, nor strength of body, and experience of enemies. All these things are weaker than a spider's web and a shadow. But if you wish to see the unconquerable power, the unassailable refuge, the inviolable fortress, the unshakable tower, flee to God, draw on that strength. And he said well, Our God is our refuge and strength; showing that sometimes we conquer by fleeing, and sometimes by standing and fighting. For we must do both of these, both to advance to close quarters, and to turn aside. This Paul also did, sometimes withdrawing, and sometimes advancing against those who opposed the word of truth. This Christ also did, teaching us; this we also must
