being hidden (432) by the divine Scriptures, having been revealed to me by a holy man in a certain place, I did not hesitate to be roused and to search for and see it, but having begged him to become my helper and co-worker and having received him, having left behind every other work and deed of life, and having arrived at the place in which that good man had indicated to me by letter the treasure was, with great toil and labor, night and day, I did not cease to dig, to excavate, to cast the earth out, and to make the trench deep, until the treasure began to shine through from above with the earth. Therefore, having labored for a long time digging and casting away the earth, I have seen the whole treasure lying somewhere below, from above, as I think, spread out from all the earth, and unmixed, and clean of all filth, and seeing it I always cry out, and thus I exclaim to those who disbelieve and are unwilling to labor and to dig: "Come and see, all you who disbelieve the divine Scriptures". And I do this, being wholly persuaded by Solomon who says: "What I learned without guile, I impart without grudging", for which reason I cry out thus to all, as it is said: "Come and learn that not only in the future, but is already set before your eyes and hands and feet, the ineffable treasure which is above every rule and authority. Come and be assured that this treasure, of which I speak to you, is the light of the world".
And I do not say this of myself, but the treasure itself said and says: "I am the resurrection and the life, I am the grain of mustard seed hidden in the earth, I am the pearl that is bought, (433) by the faithful, I am the kingdom of heaven hidden in your midst, and just as I am seen now by those who have sought and found me, so shall I shine both in them and upon them all, just as I am now shining, being hidden above all the heavens. I, here also, who am incomprehensible by nature, become comprehensible in you by grace, and the invisible becomes visible, not shown as great as I am, even if I remain wholly seen, but as much as the nature and power of those who see me can receive. I am the leaven, which a soul, having taken and put in its three parts, is leavened and becomes entirely like me; for such as the leaven is, such also becomes the flour that is mixed with it, together with the water and the salt; for with me, he says, the Son, exists my consubstantial Father and his Paraclete; they are naturally suited to become instead of water and salt. I am the spiritual paradise become for my servants instead of the sensible paradise, in which I place all those who believe in me and are reborn through the Spirit, who are no longer able to sin, nor does the ruler of the world have any power against them; I am in them and they are in me, and they overcome the world, because they are outside of the world and have me, who am stronger than all, with them. I am the luminous spring of the immortal stream and river, in which not after death, but every hour those who love me from the soul are washed (434) with the water flowing from me and are cleansed of all filth in body and soul and shine forth entirely, like a torch and like the form of a sunbeam. I am the sun who rises every hour in them as in the morning and is seen spiritually, just as I formerly revealed myself in the prophets, and they, seeing me, sang hymns, calling upon me always: 'For in the morning, says David, hear me; in the morning I will stand before you and you will see me', and another: 'Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear', that is, when you also keep my commandments".
And why am I so compelled to say all things to your love, as many as God, thirsting for our salvation, utters to us, but if not entirely, so that having learned through all things you may be persuaded that those who sit in darkness ought to see the great light shining, if indeed they look at all, and so that none of you may reason that it did shine, but it is impossible for men still in the body to see it. ἀποκεκρυμμένον (432) ὑπό τῶν θείων Γραφῶν ὄντα, μηνυθέντα μοι ὑπό ἁγίου ἀνδρός ἐν τόπῳ τινί, οὐ κατώκνησα διεγερθῆναι καί τοῦτον ἐρευνῆσαι καί ἰδεῖν, ἀλλά κἀκεῖνόν μοι βοηθόν γενέσθαι ἐξαιτησάμενον καί συνεργόν καί λαβών, πᾶσαν ἄλλην ἐργασίαν καί πρᾶξιν τοῦ βίου καταλιπών καί τῷ τόπῳ, ἐν ᾧ μοι εἶναι τόν θησαυρόν ὁ ἀγαθός ἐκεῖνος ἀνήρ διά γραμμάτων ἐδήλωσεν, ἐπιστάς, κόπῳ πολλῷ καί μόχθῳ νυκτός καί ἡμέρας ὀρρύσειν, σκάπτειν, τόν χοῦν ἔξω βάλλειν καί εἰς βάθος ποιεῖν οὐκ ἐπαυσάμην τό ὄρυγμα, ἕως ὁ θησαυρός διαυγάζειν σύν τῷ χοΐ ἄνωθεν ἤρξατο. Ἐπί πολύ οὖν κοπιάσας ἐξορύττων καί τόν χοῦν ἀπορρίπτων, ὅλον τόν κάτω που κείμενον θησαυρόν ἔνωθεν, ὡς οἴομαι, πάσης τῆς γῆς καί ἀμιγῆ καί παντός ῥύπου καθαρόν ἐφηπλωμένον τεθέαμαι, καί ὁρῶν ἀεί κράζω καί οὕτω τοῖς διαπιστοῦσι καί κοπιᾶν καί ὀρύσσειν μή θέλουσιν ἐκβοῶ· "∆εῦτε ἴδετε πάντες οἱ τάς θείας διαπιστοῦντες Γραφάς". Τοῦτο δέ ποιῶ τῷ Σολομῶντι πάντως πειθόμενος λέγοντι· "Ἀδόλως τε ἔμαθον, ἀφθόνως τε μεταδίδωμι", διό δή τοῦτο οὕτω βοῶ τοῖς πᾶσιν, ὡς εἴρηται· "∆εῦτε μάθετε ὅτι οὐκ ἐν τῷ μέλλοντι μόνον, ἀλλ᾿ ἤδη που πρόκειται πρό τῶν ὀφθαλμῶν καί χειρῶν καί ποδῶν ὑμῶν ὁ ὑπεράνω πάσης ἀρχῆς καί ἐξουσίας ἀνεκλάλητος θησαυρός. ∆εῦτε πιστώθητε ὅτι τό φῶς τοῦ κόσμου ὁ θησαυρός οὗτος, ὅν ὑμῖν λέγω, ἐστί".
Καί οὐκ ἐγώ ἀπ᾿ ἐμαυτοῦ τοῦτο λαλῶ, ἀλλ᾿ αὐτός εἶπε καί λέγει ὁ θησαυρός· "Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ἀνάστασις καί ἡ ζωή, ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ κόκκος τοῦ σινάπεως ὁ κατακρυπτόμενος ἐν τῇ γῇ, ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ μαργαρίτης ὁ ὠνούμενος, (433) ὑπό τῶν πιστῶν, ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν ἡ ἐν μέσῳ ὑμῶν κρυπτομένη, καί καθώς ὁρῶμαι ὑπό τῶν ζητησάντων καί εὑρόντων με νῦν, οὕτω λάμψω καί ἐν αὐτοῖς καί ἐπάνω πάντων αὐτῶν, ὡς νῦν εἰμι λάμπων ἀποκεκρυμμένος ὤν ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν. Ἐγώ καί ἐνταῦθα, ὁ ἀχώρητος κατά φύσιν, ἐν ὑμῖν κατά χάριν γίνομαι χωρητός καί ὁ ἀόρατος ὁρατός, οὐχ ὅσος εἰμί δεικνύμενος, εἰ καί ὅλος μένω ὁρώμενος, ἀλλ᾿ ὅσον ἡ τῶν ὁρώντων με φύσις καί δύναμις ἐπιδέχεται. Ἐγώ εἰ μι ἡ ζύμη, ἥν λαβοῦσα ψυχή καί βάλουσα ἐν τῷ τριμερεῖ αὐτῆς, ἀναζυμοῦται καί ὅλῃ ἐμοί ὁμοία καθίσταται· οἵα γάρ ἡ ζύμη, τοιοῦτος γίνεται καί ὁ ταύτῃ ἀναφυρόμενος σύν τῷ ὕδατι καί τῷ ἅλατι ἄλευρος· σύν ἐμοί γάρ, φησί, τῷ Υἱῷ ὑπάρχων ὁ ὁμοφυής μου Πατήρ καί ὁ τούτου Παράκλητος, αὐτοί ἀντί ὕδατος καί ἁλός πεφύκασι γίνεσθαι. Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἀντί τοῦ αἰσθητοῦ παραδείσου νοητός τοῖς ἐμοῖς δούλοις παράδεισος γεγονώς, ἐν ᾧ τιθῶ πάντας τούς πιστεύοντας εἰς ἐμέ καί ἀναγεννωμένους διά τοῦ Πνεύματος, οἵ οὐκέτι δύνανται ἁμαρτάνειν, οὐδέ ὁ τοῦ κόσμου ἄρχων ἰσχύει τι κατ᾿ αὐτῶν· ἐγώ εἰμι ἐν αὐτοῖς καί αὐτοί ἐν ἐμοί καί νικῶσι τόν κόσμον, διά τό εἶναι αὐτούς ἔξω τοῦ κόσμου καί τόν ἰσχυρότερον πάντων ἐμέ μεθ᾿ ἑαυτῶν ἔχειν. Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ φωτοειδής πηγή τοῦ ἀθανάτου ῥείθρου καί ποταμοῦ, ἐν ᾗ οὐ μετά θάνατον, ἀλλά καθ᾿ ὥραν οἱ ἐμέ φιλοῦντες ἀπό ψυχῆς λούονται (434) τῷ ἀπορρέοντι ὕδατι ἐξ ἐμοῦ καί παντός ῥύπου καθαίρονται τό σῶμα καί τήν ψυχήν καί ἀπαστράπτουσιν ὅλοι, ὥσπερ λαμπάς καί ὡς εἶδος ἀκτῖνος ἡλιακῆς. Ἐγώ εἰμι ὁ ἀντανίσχων καθ᾿ ὥραν ἐν τούτοις ὡς ἐν πρωΐ καί ὁρώμενος ἥλιος νοερῶς, καθώς καί πρῴην ἐν τοῖς προφήταις ἐνεφάνιζον ἐμαυτόν καί αὐτοί ὁρῶντες ἀνύμνουν, ἐπικαλούμενοί με ἀεί· "Τό πρωΐ γάρ, φησίν ὁ ∆αυίδ, εἰσάκουσόν μου, τό πρωΐ παραστήσομαί σοι καί ἐπόψει με", καί ἕτερος· "Τότε ῥαγήσεται πρώϊμον τό φῶς σου καί τά ἰάματά σου ταχύ ἀνατελεῖ", ὅτε δηλονότι καί σύ τάς ἐντολάς μου τηρήσεις".
Καί τί πάντα λέγειν πρός τήν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην οὕτω καταναγκάζομαι, ὅσα ὁ Θεός διψῶν τήν σωτηρίαν ἡμῶν πρός ἡμᾶς φθέγγεται, ἀλλ᾿ ἤ πάντως, ἵνα διά πάντων μαθόντες πεισθήσησθε ὅτι οἱ καθήμενοι ἐν σκότει τό μέγα φῶς λάμπον βλέπειν ὀφείλουσιν, εἴπερ ὅλως ἐμβλέπουσι, καί ἵνα μή τινες ἐξ ὑμῶν λογίζωνται ὅτι ἔλαμψε μέν, ἀδύνατον δέ τούς ἔτι ὄντας ἀνθρώπους ἐν σώματι καθορᾶν αὐτό.
