for these reasons acceptable for the veneration of the holy sepulchre. 10.6.7 Now, those of the Latins, such as Bohemond and those of like mind with him, having long harbored a desire for the Roman empire and wishing to acquire it for themselves, found a pretext in the preaching of Peter, as has been said; they created such a commotion, deceiving the more simple-minded, and pretending to be marching against the Turks to avenge the holy sepulchre, they sold their own lands.
10.7.1 But a certain Ubus [Hugh], the brother of the king of Francia, puffed up with the pride of Nauatus on account of his noble birth, wealth, and power of his native land, being about to set out, ostensibly for the holy sepulchre, sent words of folly and messaged the emperor, arranging for a magnificent reception to be made for him. “Know,” he said, “O emperor, that I am the king of kings and the greatest of those under heaven. And it is fitting that you should meet and receive me now as I arrive, magnificently and in a manner worthy of my noble birth.” 10.7.2 When the emperor heard these things, since John, son of the sebastocrator Isaac, of whom mention has been made above, happened to be doux of Dyrrachium, and Nicholas Maurocatacalon of the fleet had from time to time anchored his ships in the harbor of Dyrrachium, and from there again made sallies and patrolled the seas, so that no pirate ships might escape his notice by sailing past, the emperor immediately sent letters to both, instructing the doux of Dyrrachium to watch for his arrival by land and sea, and to immediately give the emperor swift notice of his arrival, and to receive Ubus himself magnificently; and he urged the doux of the fleet to be in no way remiss or negligent, but to be vigilant at all times. 10.7.3 And Ubus, having come safely along the coast of Lombardy, then sent envoys to the doux of Dyrrachium, twenty-four in number, clad in golden breastplates along with their greaves, with Count Tzerpenterius and Elias who had deserted from the emperor at Thessalonica. They spoke to the doux as follows: “Let it be known to you, doux, that our lord Ubus is now arriving, having taken up from Rome the golden standard of St. Peter. Know that he is the leader of the entire Frankish army. Therefore, prepare to receive him and the forces under him in a manner worthy of his authority and to meet him.” 10.7.4 While they were saying these things to the doux, Ubus, having come down through Rome to Lombardy, as has been said, and making the voyage from Bari towards Illyricum, encountered a great storm and lost most of his ships with their rowers and passengers, with only one boat, in which he happened to be, being cast ashore on the coast between Dyrrachium and a certain place called Palus, as if spat out by the waves, and it half-wrecked. Two of those who were watching for his arrival met him, miraculously saved, and they summoned him, saying, “The doux awaits your arrival, longing to see you.” He immediately asked for a horse. And one of them, dismounting from his horse, very eagerly gave it to him. 10.7.5 And so the doux, seeing him thus saved, and deeming him worthy of a greeting, asked him where he was going and from where he had come, and having learned how the dreadful things had befallen him during his voyage, and having won him over with kind promises, henceforth set a lavish table for him. But after the banquet, he kept him at ease, but not entirely free. And having quickly reported the matters concerning him to the emperor, he waited to receive instructions from there on what should be done. 10.7.1 Οὖβος δέ τις ὁ τοῦ ῥηγὸς Φραγγίας ἀδελφὸς φυσῶν τὰ Ναυάτου ἐπ' εὐγενείᾳ καὶ πλούτῳ καὶ δυνάμει τῆς ἐνεγκαμένης μέλλων ἐξελθεῖν τάχα ὡς πρὸς τὸν ἅγιον τάφον ἀποστείλας ἀπονοίας ῥήματα ἐμήνυσε πρὸς τὸν αὐτοκράτορα προμηθευόμενος λαμπρὰν τὴν ὑπαντὴν αὐτῷ γενέσθαι· «Ἴσθι» λέγων «ὦ βασιλεῦ, ὡς ἐγὼ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν βασιλέων καὶ ὁ μείζων τῶν ὑπ' οὐρανόν. Καὶ καταλαμβά νοντά με ἤδη ἐνδέχεται ὑπαντῆσαί τε καὶ δέξασθαι μεγα λοπρεπῶς καὶ ἀξίως τῆς ἐμῆς εὐγενείας». 10.7.2 Ταῦτα ὁ βασιλεὺς ἀκούσας, ἐπεὶ δοὺξ μὲν ἔτυχε ∆υρραχίου Ἰωάν νης ὁ υἱὸς Ἰσαακίου τοῦ σεβαστοκράτορος, περὶ οὗ ἄνωθεν εἴρηται, τοῦ δὲ στόλου Νικόλαος ὁ Μαυροκατακαλὼν περὶ τὸν λιμένα τοῦ ∆υρραχίου ἐκ διαστημάτων ἐνορμίσας τὰς ναῦς κἀκεῖθεν αὖθις τὰς ἐκδρομὰς ποιούμενος καὶ τὰ πελάγη περισκοπῶν, ὡς μὴ λάθοιεν αὐτὸν λῃστρικαὶ νῆες παραπλεύσασαι, ὁ αὐτοκράτωρ εὐθὺς γράμματα πρὸς ἀμφο τέρους ἐκπέμπει ἐντειλάμενος τὸν μὲν δοῦκα ∆υρραχίου διὰ τῆς ἠπείρου καὶ τῆς παραλίας ἐφεδρεύειν τὴν τούτου ἔλευσιν καὶ παραυτίκα τῷ αὐτοκράτορι ταχεῖαν τῆς τούτου ἐλεύσεως δοῦναι γνῶσιν, αὐτὸν δὲ τὸν Οὖβον ὑποδέξασθαι μεγαλοπρεπῶς, τὸν δὲ δοῦκα τοῦ στόλου παρακελεύσασθαι μηδαμῶς ἀναπεπτωκέναι μηδὲ καταρρᾳθυμεῖν, ἀλλ' ἐγρηγο ρέναι διὰ παντός. 10.7.3 Κατὰ τὴν παραλίαν δὲ τῆς Λογγι βαρδίας ὁ Οὖβος διασωθεὶς πρέσβεις τηνικαῦτα ἐκπέμπει πρὸς τὸν δοῦκα ∆υρραχίου εἴκοσι πρὸς τοῖς τέσσαρσι τὸν ἀριθμόν, θώραξι χρυσέοις σὺν αὐταῖς κνημῖσι περιπεφραγ μένους, μετὰ τοῦ κόμητος Τζερπεντηρίου καὶ Ἠλία τοῦ ἐκ Θεσσαλονίκης ἀποδράσαντος ἀπὸ τοῦ αὐτοκράτορος. Οἱ δὲ πρὸς τὸν δοῦκα τοιαῦτα ἔλεγον· «Γνωστὸν ἔστω σοι, δούξ, ὅτι ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν Οὖβος ὅσον ἤδη καταλαμβάνει ἀναλαβόμενος ἀπὸ Ῥώμης τὴν χρυσῆν τοῦ ἁγίου Πέτρου σημαίαν. Ἀρχηγὸν δὲ τοῦτον ἐπίστασο τοῦ Φραγγικοῦ στρατεύματος ἅπαντος. Ἡτοιμάσθητι γοῦν πρὸς τὴν τού του καὶ τῶν ὑπ' αὐτὸν δυνάμεων δοχὴν ἀξίαν τῆς αὐτοῦ ἐξουσίας καὶ τὴν πρὸς αὐτὸν ὑπαντὴν ποιησόμενος.» 10.7.4 Τούτων τοιαῦτα πρὸς τὸν δοῦκα λεγόντων ὁ Οὖβος διὰ τῆς Ῥώμης εἰς Λογγιβαρδίαν, ὡς εἴρηται, κατελθὼν καὶ διὰ τῆς Βάρεως ὡς πρὸς τὸ Ἰλλυρικὸν τὸν ἀπόπλουν ποιού μενος κλύδωνι μεγίστῳ περιπεσὼν ἀπώλεσε τὰ πλείω τῶν αὐτοῦ πλοίων σὺν αὐτοῖς ἐρέταις καὶ ἐπιβάταις, ἑνὸς μόνου σκάφους, ἐν ᾧ αὐτὸς ἔτυχε, κατὰ τὴν μεσαίχμιον παραλίαν τοῦ τε ∆υρραχίου καὶ τόπου τινὸς καλουμένου Πάλους ἀποπτυσθέντος οἷον παρὰ τῶν κυμάτων καὶ αὐτοῦ ἡμιθραύστου. Παραδόξως δὲ τούτῳ σωθέντι περιτυχόντες δύο τινὲς τῶν περισκοπούντων τὴν τούτου ἔλευσιν μετεκα λοῦντο αὐτὸν λέγοντες ὡς «Ὁ δοὺξ ἀπεκδέχεταί σου τὴν ἄφιξιν ἐπιποθῶν σε θεάσασθαι». Ὁ δ' εὐθὺς ἵππον ἐζήτει. Ἅτερος δὲ τούτων ἀποβὰς τοῦ ἵππου τοῦτον αὐτῷ μάλα προθύμως δίδωσιν. 10.7.5 Οὕτω γοῦν τοῦτον ὁ δοὺξ σωθέντα θεασάμενος καὶ προσηγορίας ἀξιώσας, ὅπη τε καὶ ὅθεν ἐπερωτήσας καὶ ὅπως αὐτῷ διαπλωζομένῳ τὰ δεινὰ ξυμ βέβηκε μαθὼν καὶ ἐπανακτησάμενος χρησταῖς ὑποσχέσεσι τράπεζαν αὐτῷ δαψιλῆ τοῦ λοιποῦ παρατίθησιν. Μετὰ δὲ τὴν εὐωχίαν ἄνετον μέν, οὐκ ἐλεύθερον δὲ παντελῶς εἶχε. Ταχὺ δὲ τῷ αὐτοκράτορι τὰ κατ' αὐτὸν δηλώσας ἐκαρτέρει τὸ ποιητέον ἐκεῖθεν δέξασθαι.
