the body is sown in weakness and dishonor, so that it may rise in power and glory? 5.176 It is worthwhile to consider how this spiritual feast is celebrated on the fifteenth of the seventh month. For the one who celebrates, through the interpreted tabernacles, must transcend the world that came to be in six days, resting from every servile work, keeping the Sabbath according to the "Sabbath rest that remains for the people of God," which Jesus alone confirms, saying: "I will give rest to all you who come," and again: "You will find rest for your souls." 5.177 On the fifteenth day of this seventh month those celebrate who have "given a portion to seven and also to eight," having accepted the old and new covenant; for through the seven the old is signified because of the Sabbath-keeping, and through the eight the resurrection of Christ after the cross which happened on the eighth day, the Lord's day. 5.178 Zach. XIV, 17: And it shall be that whoever of all the tribes of the earth does not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the Lord Almighty, they also shall be added to them. 5.179 Since the spiritual Jerusalem is set on high, according to the philosophy of the Apostle who writes, in one place: "But the Jerusalem above," and in another: "You have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem," only those go up to it who are able to say: "But our citizenship is in heaven," and again: "He raised us up," God, that is, "and seated us together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus," while those who still "bear the image of the man of dust" and "set their minds on earthly things" are tribes of the earth and do not go up to the beautiful city set on high that sees peace. 5.180 Those who do not go up will be added to those from all the nations who do not go up, suffering the same things as them. 5.181 Since those who set their minds on earthly things do not go up because they are borne downwards by the burden of earthly works, those who have hastened to go up to the city that has unshakable foundations because of the one who founded it, its "architect and builder, the Lord," will worship the King, the Lord Almighty, with the angels. For it is written: "All the angels of God will worship him." 5.182 The King who is worshipped, being Lord and Almighty, is not designated as the Father without the Son nor the Son without the Father. For the kingdom is one and the lordship the same and the almighty power of the Trinity is the same. Therefore, if a desire enters us to worship the Trinity as King, Lord Almighty, let us not remain tribes of the earth, but having stored up treasure in heaven let us have our heart there, so that being in Jerusalem we may worship with all rational creation, "every knee of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth bowing to the King, to the glory of God the Father every tongue confessing that Jesus is Lord." 5.183 Zach. XIV, 18-19: But if the tribe of Egypt does not go up nor come there, upon them also will be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the feast of tabernacles. This will be the sin of Egypt and the sin of all the nations that do not go up to celebrate the feast of tabernacles. 5.184 Of what power and excellence it is to celebrate the feast of tabernacles anagogically in Jerusalem has been said before, from which it is also manifest of what magnitude it is to go up to the proposed festival, and what a fall they suffer who deprive themselves of this exceeding greatness. 5.185 Not only the Egyptians, but also all the other nations will be struck and will fall by the economy of God, so that, perceiving that they are evil, they may take up a desire "to keep a feast among the thick-boughs," that is, of the tabernacles. 5.186 Since this feast has two meanings, which have already been mentioned before, one must strive intently with divine love to accomplish progress in virtue "with a voice of exultation
